I am just about done trying to sell stuff on craigslist

Have pretty much never had a problem buying anything, but selling is another thing entirely.

List item.

Get 11ty emails....90% of them are nigerian royalty. These guys love me!

Filter out the legit emails.

Reply to them in order received.

More royalty.

Get replies from the legit guys, replies contain absurd lowballs and tales of woe about why they can't pay more.

Eventually whittle things down to one or two guys who actually want to meet up.

Figure out time and place.

Odds of person actually showing up typically < 50%.

I have been trying to sell some bike wheels for months now. I have yet to have anyone actually show up to buy them. One dude gave me the most ridiculous runaround a while back and OF COURSE was the first one to email me when I relisted them a couple days ago. I can't decide if I should ignore him or send a reply with an inline goatse image at 1600 x 1200. :hmm:

Agreed.

In the case of being a buyer you are, in fact one of the extremely small minority that are serious and actually show up.

Yeah, I don't fuck around at all. I may offer slightly less than the asking if I think they are way off base, but otherwise it's "okay here's cash, gimme that".

Only used CL twice for sales.

Both times, got asking price within 2 days of listing.
No scammers replied

I bought my 4Runner on Craigslist about a year ago, and even from a BUYER's point of view, CL is awful. I had to go through a full CarFax membership due to idiots sending me VIN #'s for salvaged cars. Best I could do was keep flagging their ads for making me waste my CarFax searches. I've been thinking about selling the 4Runner and getting something smaller, but the thought of dealing with people on CL is almost worse than just trading it in and getting raped...

I love how in all of these threads, people seem to blame CL for a problem that has nothing to do with CL. Some people just like to window shop, and some people are just shitty people. If you owned a storefront, or if you put your ad in the classifieds as has been done since the invention of the printing press, you would still be dealing with these types of people.

If you're buying on CL, don't be an asshole. If you're selling on CL, for starters don't act like your shit doesn't stink, price it appropriately. If no one is buying, lower your price. If people are waffling on you, lay down the law. I did that two weeks ago, a guy refused to come to my house to pick up a calculator. I said fine, I'm selling it to the next person in line. Problem solved.

I've sold 2 cars and bought 3 motorcycles through CL. All have been great experiences because it was a deal between me and a person, CL had nothing to do with how smoothly the transaction went.

It's not against the TOS to sell a salvage titled vehicle on CL. If you're automatically going to pull a Carfax on every single car you come across, why would you buy anything but a full Carfax membership?

Wading through the email exchanges is not such a terrible ordeal, but when I get in my car to go meet you to sell something and you don't show, I'm going to be pissed.

Sold my PS3 + games + logitech DFGT wheel on CL. But since I didn't want to deal with the nigerian royalty, the scammers, lowballers, and other BS I did what any sane person would. I paid my friend, who buys and sells all day long on CL, $20 to do the legwork. 3 sales, $350 or so richer. Well down from what was paid but it was a year or so old and I didn't even play the PS3.

this. i bought the 5 pack, because i did want to track the car i was serious about. i looked at about 40 cars, only actually checked carfax on 4 of them, the last one being the one i bought. gotta know when its worth it, otherwise buy the unlimited if youre going to check everyones cars. i had 2 of the sellers ask if they could have my carfax print outs. i told them 15 bucks and id give it to them lol.

Latest one I posted today...

"... listed price cash only *firm* no trades. Please note, if you didn't bother to pay attention to the previous sentence, then don't bother contacting me."

Got one email so far asking if I still had the item in question, that's it.

Yeah it's a complete pain in the ass to sell shit. I've been trying to sell my laptop for a few months now. Only have gotten 1 legitimate offer, hundreds (literally) of nigerian fucktards. Those fucking idiots are even emailing me about my fridge I put up on there. They deserve to be shot.

Funny, I'd rather deal with EBay, PayPal and their stupid fees than deal with the dregs of the earth and possibly homicidal maniacs on CL.

The past two days I have sold two items on EBay. After shipping, fees and shit, I netted the incredible total of $21.00. 🙁 All my old computer parts...you know, the video card I paid $300 for back in 2005? Yeah, it sold for $20. Like items were selling for less or not at all.

OTOH an 80mm hairdryer fan that came with a server chassis sold for $5.00...woo-hoo! I'm rich, bitch! 😀

Item sold, money in my PayPal, print label off paypal, take to PO next day. Easy and no in person meets or driving to some brightly lit area in case it's a carjack operation.

CL is teh debil.

Good luck, though!

I feel the same way.

I get alot of emails asking too many questions and then no follow ups. Or emails asking if it's still available and no follow up.. or extreme low balls.
