Not likely stable, but i'd be happy with 4 GHz...so yeah 😛

VID is 1.15v 🙂
Temps at same vcore as previous Q9550 are drastically higher 🙁
Q9550 needed nearly 1.4v to do 4+ GHz.
Q9650 is doing over 4 GHz @ 1.3v 😀

Oh, & i'm back to my P5Q-D...thank god.
UD3P was short-lived less than fun experiment that failed.

Update: stable OC results: 4.2 GHz

Im not sure whats more impressive, the overclock, voltage or those temps!

Sorry to see you never got the UD3P memory issues worked out, but with those overclock speeds, I know i wouldnt care. 😀
 
too much memory for the ud3p? yesterday's anand review of the board was like olberman reviewing obama... but they didn't go 8gb...
 
Man I'm so tempted to swap my Q6600 for a Q9650. I'm sure my 790i would love hitting 4.0Ghz. 😀

I don't know if ncix still has it in stock, let me guess n7 you got yours there right? 😉

My Q9550 stays at 1.3v from 3.83GHz-4GHz 🙂

Is this just DTS error attributable to one CPU's DTS under/over reporting actual temperatures relative to the other? DTS output (reported temps) isn't expected to even be linear with the input (actual temps) and is only calibrated to be correct at TJmax.

Really?? I have a ud3p and a Q9650 @ 4Ghz at 1.25v and I am running 4 x 1gb Crucial Ballistix 1066.
I have not had one problem as of yet knock on wood.
I am sorry to hear about your bad experience with Gigabyte just a stroke of bad luck I think.
Its cool though that you are happy with your q9650 I too am very happy with mine.
I went from core I7 920 and for a few days tried out AMD's 940BE and over all my Q9650@4Ghz is faster then both in every way.
Mind you I cant say how they would match up clock for clock cause I didnt clock the I7 920 or the AMD 940BE to 4GHz only ran them at 3.6-3.8Ghz but even then there was no contest q9650 is the flat out winner!!
I am hoping that there will be a new revision of the q9650 with lower TDP hopefully 65w would be just amazing and I would with out a doubt by it asap!!

This is all very interesting. I entertained replacing a mobo in another system with that Gigabyte model until we discovered the problem to be a hard disk going south.

On my most recent build, I have a 780i chipset with an E8600 -- very pleased with the 4+Ghz OC, but not happy with the thermal monitoring. If you can get to 4 Ghz with a Q9650, I'll be watching the price on those quads and putting it on my "wish list."

I'd be happy to replace the E8600 with a quad that would do 3.8+ Ghz.
 
Well, that failed 48 minutes in...not a CPU issue, a FSB or NB one (896k)
Hopefully a wee bit higher NB GTL will fix that...

It didn't like running higher FSBs with my 8 GB.

I did, though i ordered it last Wednesday when they were a bit higher, & PMed to newegg, which was higher then as well.
If i were you, i'd wait a bit more, as it looks like they might go down a bit more even.

All i know is TJMax was 95C in RealTemp, & 100C in CoreTemp for both my Q9550 & now this Q9650, & the Q9650 runs much warmer at the same voltages...
I've actually noticed this with every single lower VID CPU...they always run warmer.
The higher VID ones always run cooler, but need more voltage to get anywhere.

I've heard this is pretty much how it works from others, but it's kinda annoying, because those nice low VID chips then become temps-limited, & if they weren't, they'd be just amazing chips.

BTW, what is actually correct? CoreTemp or RealTemp (100C TJmax or 95C TJmax)?

Having the correct TJmax is only part of the equation. There is a another issue with relying on DTS-derived temperatures for determining your CPU's temps of particular relevance when trying to compare temperatures between CPU's.

Basically the point is that until you go thru laborious steps and procedures to fully calibrate the entire operating range of your DTS's you actually won't know if the CPU reporting higher temps is actually hotter or cooler than the CPU reporting lower temps.

As calibrated at the factory (Intel) the only temperature at which you can rely on the DTS's to accurately report the CPU temp is when the CPU is at TJmax. All reported temperatures below or above TJmax are likely to be either under-estimated or over-estimated by the DTS hardware and there is no assurance of any two CPU's under-estimating or over-estimating temperatures in similar fashion. Like snowflakes, they melt at the same temp but otherwise look nothing alike.

seriously, the 9650 has to be one of the best chips made for the LGA775, only to be beaten by a new X3380.

I don't think anyone was doubting you; i know i sure wasn't.

But until these recent price drops, they weren't a financially viable option for most of us poor people.

As for mine, my bumped up NB GTL helped, but not enough 🙁

Interesting that you had memory problems with the UD3P. I posted in comp help about a laggy build with 8gb (4x2gb) and the UD3P and i'm really starting to wonder if it is an issue with memory and the board. Laggy System I don't know much about computers but seems like sporadic problems of this sort are cropping up even as it garners stellar review after stellar review. For what its worth I can't get (4x2gb G.Skill cheap 1066 model which have been memtested) to boot at 1066 with the board, though have no idea if it is related to your issues you had.

Seems the Low Vid chips clock very well with lower volts but like you said, they run Hot.
