I am graduating University in 8 months with a mid 70 average but with 4 years of work experience..

I will be graduating next year summer with a mid 70s average but with excellent work experience for the past 4 years in a few fortune 20 companies. I stayed with one of them for two years straight and managed a few high profile projects.

Right now I am doing an 4 month internship with another company before going back to school next year Jan.

My average is only in the mid 70s and that is what worry me. Will I have a good chance to compete for a decent job after graduation or for grad school?

It depends on the company. While work experience is great, some companies have pretty set "we will not look at you if your GPA isn't at least x.xx" standards. It can vary though.

If you know your stuff, you'll be fine.
After your first job, noone is going to care what your college GPA was.

Just put forth an impressive resume and leave your GPA off of it. By the time they scan it over and note all your great work experience they'll barely care about GPA. Experience trumps grades any day.

Proof of concept: My GPA on graduation was pretty horrid, and I was hired within three weeks of finishing school.

I graduated with a low GPA and a Sociology degree and somehow found a job in IT in a few weeks after graduation. You just have to have good experience and know a few people.

Job interviews set up by your College career center may have a GPA qualifier on them. So you may miss out on quite a few interviews.

i competely agree with sully, you'll do better then 95% of your classmates provided your work experience was relavent and somewhat interesting.

this is true, even if they tell you "we won't look at your resume if there aren't any GPA" that's BS.

for 1 year I left my GPA on my resume, never got called back for any interviews. The next year, I took it completely off, and filled up my resume with my experience. Got a lot of interviews, with really big companies.

Years of being overworked and underpaid and underappreciated. Seeing others less deserving of yourself getting paid/promoted more. questioning your goals in life, the 40+ hour work week and the point of ever working so hard to get where you are in the first place...

With a few exceptions, most jobs/industries care way more about experience than education. The exceptions I've seen are law and finance.

The only time GPA really matters is that first job. Get anything you can and do well. Then start searching for a new job.

Just apply to as many places as you can. Something will come up. It definitely helps if you have connections though. Connections get jobs.
