I am going to change the name of my pc to singularity

I have an AMD A10-6700 and thought it would be nice to install AMD overdrive.

I just installed AMD overdrive and my temp readings are -274,7C , -277,7C and -278,7C.
My system is colder than vacuum of space ? 😵

CPU cores are at a constant 69C when idle. 😱

I would have expected that AMD overdrive would get the temperature right.
 
Aha, the 69C is thermal margin and not the real temperature. I guess my apu stays pretty cool then. But my other temps should be read out correctly.
 
The sensors in your 6700 probably don't work the same way as on my 7700k, but I find that CoreTemp is most useful for tracking thermal margin and that SpeedFan produces fairly reliable socket temperatures. So far, anyway.
 
I wanted to download coretemp but my virusscanner goes beserk on the download link. I have been reading through forums and some people claim coretemp actually does contain additional software. And it seems even core temp does not get it right. So to be on the safe side, i have not tried it.

I personally use CPUID HW monitor.
CPUID HW monitor seems about right with the temperatures. 🙂
Seems to be the same values as are presented in the bios HW monitor.
 
Hmm. I just found a bug in Opera 26. My keyboard to character mapping was changed. After a restart of Opera it was alright again. 🙂

In CPUID HW monitor, the package temperature is actual the thermal margin value. At least, that is what i suspect given that the value is very similar to the thermal margin value of AMD overdrive.

In my case, the temperature of the cpu socket temperature is about 1 to 2 degrees Celcius higher than the temperatures of my SSD and HDD. This in idle mode.
In idle, my system is generally 28C to 30C celcius.

Makes it all very confusing...
I wish the hardware manufacturers would standardize temperatures to certain software functions in the sense that every manufacturer would provide a plugin that every hardware monitor program understands. A DLL where one standardized function provides output of capabilities of all available functions.
 
It would be nice, wouldn't it? Sadly, AMD processors are pretty goofy when it comes to temp monitoring. Under Linux, the only thing I can track via lm sensors (which is basically the standard for Linux hardware monitoring . . . I think) is thermal margin.
 
That'd be to easy and sensible, standardization.

fwiw HWINFO64 and CoreTemp are both accurate on all the AM3 chips I've used.
The former of those two is tops for monitoring imo.
 
Seems like you wound up with one of the ubersecret AMD skunkworks chips. Did you buy it from that sketchy site based in Waxahachie, Texas?

There's a rumor that started recently on how AMD plans to leapfrog the process/R&D gap to Intel...

You have to admit it's an eerie coincidence.

However, the wonky thermal reporting software is a better cover story.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. After I installed the new version of Aida64, my 6800K started showing core temperatures of 374C... 😵

I'm reminded of the infamous tomshardware-video that showed an original Athlon reach 374C before... expiring. Coincidence? I don't think so... 😛

Package temperature seems reasonably accurate though.
