Hi

I am going to buy the following components for my computer. Did I a big mistake, choosing its content ? please submit problems, aso...

case 250W ( I-Win )
cpu : athlon thunderbird 1.1ghz + its cooler
mobo: asus A7V
ram : 256Mb Siemens RAM
gfx : ATI Radeon 32M DDR
cd drive : TOSHIBA 48x
network card : Soho Basic one...
floppy

additionnally, i'll put what I already have :

HDD : IBM 30Gb 10'000rpm

So what to change ? I don't think I need a 300W PS for what's in this computer, according to anandtech's article, which says that the 1.1Ghz takes max 55W.

thanks bye

yeah go for 300W. seems like basic nowadays. you will never know when you would like to add all those stuff to your computer

Get the 300W PS now, or you'll be upgrading it later. It might be fine now, but if you start adding components to it later, you could very well max it out. better to be safe than sorry.

it takes 55 watts for the cpu but other stuff eats up power, that 10k drive has to suck power faster than anything. Get AT LEAST a 300 watt for that set up. I have the Enermax 330 watt dual fan, very nice supply and the whisper version is very quiet.

i say DEFINITELY get the 300 watt PSU. its really worth it, whether you think you "need" it or not. with what you are getting, i don't think a 250 really has the juice to run it stable, especially with that HD.

Another vote for a 300W PSU. I know it's predictable...but it's the right thing to do :)

I (along with many others here I'm sure) would also recommend either the Abit KT7 or the MSI K7T Pro 2a motherboard, rather than the Asus one you've selected. Although there's not much wrong with the Asus, the others are more stable/overclockable and generally superior motherboards.

Is that a SCSI hard drive? I was under the impression that there were NO 10,000RPM IDE drives available (although I may be wrong on that one..)

I have to say go 300W PS and the Abit KT7 is also good. I don't like the RAID, at least not with IDE drives. I have had a few fail in a RAID setup before. I am also not fond of the Highpoint controllers. Had a nightmare problem on the KA7. SoftMenuIII Bios on these is very good, where everything can be tweaked without ever opening your case!!

a) for the mobo : I'll take the Asus one, because I sometimes sell things for a computer shop (more as a tourist) and so i have good prices for many things, and I don't have Abit mobo in my list.

b) yes it is a (really great) IDE 10k rpm IBM HDD :)

thanks all for your advices, I will try to find a great 300W case, and if it isn't too expensive compared to the 250W one, i'll take this, even if i don't think i need it right now. Oh and don't reply to say that the price isn't the real problem because it is ;) the only 300W i've seen in my actual list is about 500 CHF (300 USD) :)

I second everyone else's choice of a larger power supply. Atleast 300W is in order. Seems like you have money to spend, considering you're gonna get a 30 gig 10K SCSI hard drive. Those things must be expensive. Since it's a SCSI hard drive, you need to purchase a SCSI card and adequate cooling since them 10k hard drives do get hot.

what os are you planning to run? if win98, then keep the radeon. if win2k, get a geforce 2 gts. ati's win2k drivers suck, unless anyone knows of a driver revision that's non-beta that is good. 300 watts ps sounds good too.

I had a computer with Asus A7V with 0.8GHz returned as the computer went to sleep with no reason. The vendors could not figure it out. Other vendors all point to the 250W PS. Please get one big enough. Also, some cheap PS may say 300W but would not get you there.

As far as I know, there is no such thing. The 75GXP and new 60GXP are both 7200 rpm. What model IBM is this? If there is a 10K IDE IBM, I want one.
