So I had a big maple tree with a maybe a 5 foot thick trunk. I figured that when it eventually came down, it had several thousand dollars of quality lumber in it.

Well the friggin county cut it down, and the wife (not knowing I wanted the lumber) and said they could take it away

GRRRRRR!!!!!!

It takes a hundred years to grow a tree like that. :|

If it was a danger to one of their services, they had to. Beat your wife.

It isn't that they cut it down, but there was no notice. The tree had been standing for decades. They just got it into their head it needed to go. I never mentioned it to the wife because I figured it would be a twenty or so years before would have to go.

I'll call them and see. The problem is if they cut it into little pieces, it's pretty much useless. 2 foot boards don't make good tables.

I seriously doubt they could cut down your tree without giving you a chance to take care of whatever type of problem it was causing.
I work for the State and we can't even go onto private property unless the State has exhausted all options to get the home owner to take care of it.
EDIT
We can "trespass" if it is an imminent hazard.

Why didi they cut your tree down?

About 20 years ago it was struck by lightning. The top third was trashed, but the remainder was good. This year someone decided to take down all the less than perfect trees along the road.

As I said, maybe the tree DID need to go, but the loss of lumber was probably hundreds of board feet of highly figured maple. I could probably have gotten 3 feet wide curly maple boards, which you simply cannot buy at any price.

No, but if nothing else it makes great firewood!

Ahh crap on a stick. I just went out and looked at the stump. It was 2/3s spalted maple. That's even more valuable :frown:

How old are you? If you plant several dozens of trees now, your sons will be able to reap the benefits when they're 40.

Too old to see this chance again. My grandkids might, but even my 5 year old is too old.

I did the math just now, and I figure that tree was roughly worth 15k. It was huge.

Poor guy look what it did to his manhood.

But I agree, it sucks.

😛 Yeah that was a good typo. Least I got a chuckle out of that.

I'm sorry, the wife would have to do one of several things to make this up.

Pay cash for the value of the tree to you.

Pay for it in Sexual favors

Pay for it in various non-Sexual favors

or

Leave the premise immediately.

Yep, fair trade I think. 😛

You mean, they didnt leave the tree for you? Why are you yelling at us and not the wife? Kinda sounds like you're barking up the wrong tree. Other than that, I'm stumpped at what to tell you.

😛 😛 😛

Man that is harsh 🙁

Good quality wood is PRICEY.

Koing

Another point. When we cut one down, we have to leave the wood. We can't take it. I'd call whomever cut it down and ask where your wood is.

A tree five feet wide takes a hell of a lot longer than 100 years to grow. There are two redwood trees out front of the county courthouse that are 250 years old -and they're just *barely* six feet wide.

So, Redwoods and maples grow at the same rate?
