So, I guess what your saying is that you don't believe that a reduced carb intake can cause ketosis? And that people on low carb diets burn fat only because of a lower caloric intake?Originally posted by: schizoid
Personally, I'm not a big fan of Adkins, namely because...well, that'd be the start of the rant, I guess. If it works for you, that's great, but the idea that carbs are "bad" and contribute to weight gain any more than anything else is simply not true. There are other factors involved (loss of water weight, psychosomatic effects on satiety, etc) that explain why Adkins "works", along with, of course, the aforementioned reduction in caloric intake. The reality is, all things being equal (that is, you actually DO the damn "diet") any diet (low fat, low carb, low beer, low brow, low interest, low whatever) that reduces your caloric intake will "work".
The trick is getting one that people who don't "want" to diet will stick to.
Hmmm... I think you need to do some more research. For instance, The New England Journal of Medicine recently released a study which showed that a low carb diet burned more fat in 6 months than a low fat diet did. After a year, they were pretty much equal.
As for the "psychosomatic effects", I think it's probably not fair of you to say what is and isn't real unless you've tried it. Since I started Atkins, I don't have the cravings I once did. I don't feel hungry between meals or before bed, nor do I feel the need to snack. I read others say this, but I honestly didn't believe it. Sure enough, it's true.
