Personally, I'm not a big fan of Adkins, namely because...well, that'd be the start of the rant, I guess. If it works for you, that's great, but the idea that carbs are "bad" and contribute to weight gain any more than anything else is simply not true. There are other factors involved (loss of water weight, psychosomatic effects on satiety, etc) that explain why Adkins "works", along with, of course, the aforementioned reduction in caloric intake. The reality is, all things being equal (that is, you actually DO the damn "diet") any diet (low fat, low carb, low beer, low brow, low interest, low whatever) that reduces your caloric intake will "work".

The trick is getting one that people who don't "want" to diet will stick to.
So, I guess what your saying is that you don't believe that a reduced carb intake can cause ketosis? And that people on low carb diets burn fat only because of a lower caloric intake?

Hmmm... I think you need to do some more research. For instance, The New England Journal of Medicine recently released a study which showed that a low carb diet burned more fat in 6 months than a low fat diet did. After a year, they were pretty much equal.

As for the "psychosomatic effects", I think it's probably not fair of you to say what is and isn't real unless you've tried it. Since I started Atkins, I don't have the cravings I once did. I don't feel hungry between meals or before bed, nor do I feel the need to snack. I read others say this, but I honestly didn't believe it. Sure enough, it's true.

Dude, you said the same thing I said...you don't have cravings. Fat, it is believe, creates feelings of satiety. Let's just say I have a reasonably realiable source for these feelings and what not.

Alright for weightloss but no athlete is going to go on this. But then again an athlete will mostly probably train every single day or at least every other day so they do HUGE amounts of exercise and will need energy.............

I look at Atkins as the caveman diet. Basically it eliminates all of the processed and artificial crap that we have been eating for the last couple of decades and gets back to basics. There have been some surprising studies about heart disease - for example, a few years ago the French had some of the lowest heart disease rates in the world, and their fat intake was nearly double that of Americans. But, they took in much less processed carbohydrates.

Interestingly enough, the French rate of heart disease has been on the rise as fast-food restaurants have been opening in France.

I try to eat low carb as much as possible, but i am not super strict. I just feel better when sugar and white flour is cut out of my diet, that's all.

As for drinking, you can have stuff like white rum & diet coke or pepsi which is 0 carbs. Yeah your body still have to burn off the alchy but it's better for you than beer. I still have beer sometimes, can't give it up.

It's not that hard after a few weeks really...
