options? screw that. eat at a nice restaurant and don't tip if you don't want to. servers should know they might get no tips. they also have "options" like finding another job. tipping is not mandatory. it should however be a crime (its extortion basically)

Don't worry, cheapness is expected of you.
After all, you are the cheapest fucking people in the world.
Hell, even one of your own, declare you people are the cheapest in the world.

You're incorrect.

CA allows $8.

But I don't see a $12 figure... or $11 or 10. (Save CT, which allows 10 for full time employees, and $2 for part time.)

I suggest you check the US Dept of Labor link again.

Many restaurants pay MORE than minimum wage. San Francisco city has a minimum wage of 10.24 an hour. I know someone who a waiter in San Francisco, was getting 12 an hour BEFORE tips.

How about we eliminate how many places employ staff that survive on tips?

Do we really need a waittress at Applebees? Or TGI Fridays? Give me a small computer at the table, let me order and pay for everything right through there, and if I have a problem or request I'll go hunt down the manager or a hostess.

At establishments like those, a server adds very little to the experience. When I go out to eat at a fancy restaurant and am served by someone with a good deal of food knowledge, who can offer suggestions, and goes out of their way to make my meal a memorable one, then I feel great about leaving a nice tip since my dining experience was enhanced.

why would you tip 100%? I'd agree with never going back, and even tipping the standard 15-20%, but 100% would just reinforce their crappy service and then some.

Maybe with some... Upscale, and what not.

But most do not pay above minimum.

The bill ended up being $18. I had $20 and a quarter on me, so I just gave them that instead of charging it. So what happens? The boss chased me down to say I did not tip 15%. I mean, OK, it's 50 cents dude...I really did not think you would mind....

So, fine, he wants the 15%? I demand my cash back and take out my Amex card. He was not happy at all, but wtf! really, all this 50 cents?

I will be totally honest, someone chases me down regarding a tip, not only will I never go there again, I will tell everyone I know, including posting on forums all over the internet... That is pure fucking garbage. What if the service sucked? If I have nothing but trouble at a restaurant I don't tip at all. It's not like someone "deserved" it. If someone is great, they get a good tip, higher than 15%. The whole thing is quite simple really.

I'm not sure if I agree. At least in my experience, a waiter or waitress can make the experience better if you get closer with them. I don't mean sharing a beer on Sunday, but being a bit more buddy-buddy with them whenever you're in there. Sometimes, that even nets you free stuff. :D Back when I lived in New York, a friend and I would usually go out to a local sports bar on Friday night, and we got to know a few of the waitstaff a modest amount. They would come over and chat with us for a bit. Although, his wife didn't care for it much when we would chat up the waitress Stephani-with-an-I (the 'i' thing became a bit of a gag given how it's not that common). :p

I dont know about him but I go to Applebees once a year and only cuz they give veterans a free meal.
I think I average one visit every 10 years to Fridays.

Probably cuz deep down inside I know something will make the experience unpleasant, either food or service. I am so tired of having to pay a ton of bonus money on top of already over priced goods & services just to get a decent meal. If I need to keep going back, pissing away cash and waiting for them to get to know me better just so they do their fucking job right, I think I'd rather eat a can of beans at home. The economy is shit and for some reason the average dumbass American cant make the connection between work ethic and success.

Not exactly. Definitely depends on where you are:

http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

Federal minimum is $2.13 per hour.

because they are not getting $2-3 per hour.

I know for some chains, the percentage you make in tips determines what sort of shifts you get. My girlfriend's chain enforces an 18% policy. Make at least that much in tips and you get evening shifts which have higher turnouts with typically larger orders and larger tips. Make under that and you put on morning and lunch shifts where you can't make as much money. It's stupid and seems backwards, but that's how it's done. And I believe the federal required wage for tipped positions is only in the $2-$3 range, so waiter/waitresses literally live off their tips.

Are you serious? After all these tipping threads, people still keep clinging to this misinformation?

WATIERS DO NOT MAKE $2-$3 PER HOUR. IF THEY DO NOT MAKE ENOUGH IN TIPS TO PUT THEM OVER STANDARD MINIMUM WAGE, THE RESTURANT HAS TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE.

NO WAITER MAKES LESS THAN 7.25 OR WHATEVER MINIMUM WAGE IS

MANY WAITERS MAKE $8-$12 PER HOUR PLUS TIPS

I went to a sushi restaurant that advertises happy hour from 2 to 5PM. I got there at 4:30 and started ordering sushi. When I was done eating at 5:30, instead of a bill of a $1 a piece it came to about $3 a piece. I complained and they said that since the bill was calculated after happy hour, I had to pay regular price. To avoid an argument, I paid, but left no tip. I started to walk out and two Japanese waiters started to chase me down. I got to my car and they started tapping on the glass wanting a tip.

"You must leave a tip!"

I told them to leave or I am calling the police. I actually had to call 911 on my phone before they left me alone. Three months later this place closes.

That is funny, because people don't tip in Japan.

I totally disagree.
15 years ago (stale info but its what i know) my wife worked as a waitress at the NCO club on 3 different air force bases, 1 was in Germany and the other 2 were in the US. She got paid 3 bucks a hour then what ever tips they got that night and they had to be split with the staff. some nights she pulled in 100+ in tips but most nights she was luck to bring home 15 bucks in tips.

Tell him to get fucked. Tips are optional...not mandatory.

Eat at McDonalds then.

Him chasing you down was wrong, but i find most tech people cheap as hell and have no clue since most have not worked a service industry job.

I have Bartended for 20+ years as a second job. My paycheck every 2 weeks is zero and i actually owe normally $400-$800 a year to work there since they tips they claim off sales does not cover what the $2.62 a hour check does for 2 nights a week.

I am fine with anything as long as people leave something. I worked doing some networking stuff when i was younger and it was amazing when we went to lunch 90% of the people we went with would toss in say $8 bucks for there lunch, when there burger was $6, pop $2. So not only would they not even tip, they would not even cover there own tax when it was all billed in one.

I have a lady that tips me $500+ a night when she comes in when she spends $100 or so total, i have people that give me a quarter on a beer, i treat both the same.

The people i can't stand are the pushy, loud, cut in front of other people then don't tip on $40+ rounds. Its cool though they do it once then wait next time, the beauty of working in a club with 1000+ people there a night.

Waiters that don't make at least minimum wage without tips don't have jobs b/c a restaurant is not going to want to pay them the difference.

And? That would mean he was a bad server, which would warrant him getting fired.

But everyone in this thread is saying "oh waiters are starving! they only make $2! you have to tip them or they'll die!"

If NOBODY TIPPED then EVERYBODOY WOULD MAKE MINIMUM WAGE. Restaurants wouldn't fire anybody either since its not like just one person is failing to get tips. If just one person is failing to get tips, they are probably a bad server.

I totally disagree.

Yeah, but her total wages over a certain period had to be over minimum wage as required by law. If she makes 100 bucks one night at 15 the next, that would be an average of 57.5 bucks. If she works 8 hours, that would be more than seven bucks an hour on top of the 2 or 3 she already made.

Since she worked on an air force base, I would think they would follow federal law.

If you go to Iceland and try to tip a cabbie or a waiter they'll look at you funny.

Probably because their wages tend to be better than their American counterparts...

Maybe if the base pay for our cab drivers, bartenders, and waiters was higher we could forgo the tipping custom?

It would but they way its built around now, owners will never pay wages = to what this would be.

Well I've heard that if the minimum wage from the 60's or 70's kept up with inflation it would be about $10 and some change.

Oh well tipping is a custom in America, but like manners perhaps it's something parents should teach their children about.
