I am getting sick of this tipping entitlement...

The bill ended up being $18. I had $20 and a quarter on me, so I just gave them that instead of charging it. So what happens? The boss chased me down to say I did not tip 15%. I mean, OK, it's 50 cents dude...I really did not think you would mind....

So, fine, he wants the 15%? I demand my cash back and take out my Amex card. He was not happy at all, but wtf! really, all this 50 cents?

Chased you down? That would make me get my cash back, charge it and leave zero tip. No tip plus merchant fees. Double whammy!

Tell him to get fucked. Tips are optional...not mandatory.

Sounds like the same attitude of one of the bartenders at the bar we visit Friday nights after playing hockey. He will automatically will add 18% to the bill because "it's company policy" depending upon how many people are being served. He's the same guy who wants to chase us out at 11pm because he sends the cooking staff home and it's closing time.

IMHO there are some jobs that everybody should have at one time or another - server working for tips is one of those jobs. Day care worker - definitely. Bookkeeper. Bill collector. Medical records and insurance and billing.Law enforcement or Firefighter. Elder in an amish community. Musician.

Tips are crap and should be completely abolished. It is abundantly clear that the size of the tip has almost NOTHING to do with the quality of the service, because bad tippers will always screw even the best server and good tippers feel guilty enough that they will always leave a decent tip. Therefore, the server has to stereotype the customer wildly and deliver service according to the EXPECTED tip. Not to mention that the tip is based on the bill, which has little to do with the quality of service...so the guy ordering a glass of water and an appetizer pays half as much as the guy ordering a steak and a cocktail, despite the server having to do the same amount of work.

The cost of service should be included in the price, as should the tax. Prices could be adjusted to nice, round numbers that way, then we could finally get rid of the penny and the nickel. You could just pay your bill, and not worry about it! Places with bad service would get panned on the internet, and people would shun them, just like every other non-tipping establishment.

Oh, and I generally tip 20%. But I hate doing it every time.

convenience store worker will teach anybody just how many assholes there are in the world.

I would seriously recommend it for anyone so they learn what customers are really like.

Group gratuity is very common.

I also don't know what your issue is with them wanting you out at closing time.

20 cents. The difference was just 20 cents.

If the bill was $18, as you said, it's easy to do 15% in a couple of seconds in my head . . . 10% is $1.80 and 5% is half that, or $.90 = $2.70.

You said you left $2.50.

Ergo . . .

Still, I'm guessing you left yet another piece of info out of this, that the 15% tip was mandatory and thus itemized on your bill, and thus the total bill was printed out and staring you square in the face, and you underpaid.

Else, when the guy came after you, you would have just, rightly, laughed in his face.

Amirite?

i tip based on service. shitty service? a buck, tops. great service? good service? whatever i can easily round over 15%. great service? 20 - 25%, depending on how great and how much that extra tip is going to run.

my regular place adds 18% for parties of like 6 or 8+.

but if youre there paying for drinks...the bartenders will hang around a while. typical closing times for the place on a weekend are 11ish, but ive seen them open pretty often til midnight or so if there are a couple of people drinking with cash in hand. closing time is when customers dont want to throw money around anymore :)

In Canada waiters get paid hourly, at least $10.25 an hour, i think that is the average minimum wage. Tips are extra, no entitlement.

In the states they basically work for free and their only income is tips. That's why they feel entitled i guess. Weird way to do business, ought to be illegal to hire someone for no wage.
