crotch rockets seem very appealing to me :)

Rule #1-They are called sportbikes.

I rode a crotch rocket, it's not worth it!!!! for one thing, arent they automatica, whereas a sportbike is manual? you gotta learn to shift and get out of first gear.

Ok.. CVSiN -- This is the person you need to let have it.. Not me.

I ride an '05 Ninja 636 (PICS) and I have been loving every minute of it.

Do take the MSF course.. And if you have never ridden before -- I would suggest a smaller bike like the SV650 or the an older Ninja 500..

is it really scary when you have to "lay down" your bike? i've had my father tell me stories (he rides a cruiser type bike if i didn't mention that before, a honda goldwing) but he said he's layed his down only once now, and obviously he's still alive. actually bad/funny story, we'll put it into cliffs so its faster:

1) dad lays down bike
2) some guys on harley's see him in the ditch with his bike
3) they get distracted
4) the harley in the front hits his brakes
5) the harley in the back runs into him
6) the harley in the back breaks his ribs and is rushed to a hospital

anyways... is it scary?

Of course it is. Your last thoughts before you hit are "this is gonna hurt."

Don't get one. My uncle was a motocross rider and was paralyzed from the waist down.

My father was expert class motocross, and even he injured himself. No matter how safe you are, you will get in an accident. Other people or your own fault, you will.

I'm surprised you haven't warned us yet about touching electrical sockets or running with scissors.

Just remember there are two kinds of motor cyclists, those who have layed down a bike, and those who will.

Why do you guys call it 'laying down'? I think it must be an american term. Do you mean sliding ie losing grip on the front wheel when cornering? Laying down sounds so gentil and peaceful. We call it sliding or crashing 'stacking'. You can high-side too which is a nasty one. When cornering your bike loses grip and begins to slide perpendicular to the direction of travel, then it suddenly grips but the momentum compresses the suspension and the bike shoots up to a vertical position from a lean, usually flinging the rider into the air.

Personally I've had 3 accidents. two slides (wet roads, inexperience, poor use of front brake round corners) and one asshole who tried to overtake me when making a right turn. (Drive on the left here)

okay, so i was talking to my father at dinner tonight and he was telling me some things about how bad sportbikes are (he calls them crotch rockets). he was saying "oh they're hard to turn and hard to manuver". keep in mind that he rides a honda goldwing. also keep in mind i have never ridden on or driven a motorcycle once in my life. should i let his negative comments discourage me from getting a sportbike? i'm going to get one no matter what, actually, but he had all these negative things to say and i can't even remember them all. he was bashing them pretty hard though.

hahaha, for once i sort of agree with Ornery. not your decision to buy a bike, but rathe to buy a sport bike. your mind is already made up to go and buy one of these death machines, so why the hell even bother starting this thread? why waste our time?

you wasted your own time, you didn't have to read this thread, let alone type a response to it.

sorry you wasted your own time :)

And actually the point of this thread was to see what kind of bike would be a good starter bike, and any other things I should do to get ready.
