Hey, good for you!

I know it's very tough, but I know it can be done. My mom quit when she first got pregnant with my older sister, and it's been a smoke-free house for decades now :)

By the way, your hubby really needs to quit too if you're to have a good chance of keeping it up. Go to a doctor and get some help, it will at least help ease the transition.

It really is worth whatever crap you have to go through to get free of the addiction. Hang in there, and best to ya! :D

I quit coldturkey when I quit. Doing it over the xmas season when there is lots of extra stress will make it harder. I found that it got easier and easier after I made it through the first week.

Well, I am going on my fourth day, and have not touched one yet. I woke up this morning and did not crave that first cigarette of the day. It is still hitting me off and on, but I can feel the difference already. Thanks again for the support, you guys have been very helpful to me. :)

Good job, GirlFriday.

Keep it up. Just take it one minute at a time. That's what they tell me at my...er...nevermind.
:D

It's admirable, trying to quit.

We're all behind you 100%.

GF:

I like Isla's advice! Just think of all that shopping you can do with all the money you saved.

Doing it for your kids is noble, but quitting is much more personal. It must be done for YOU.

Also, are you into any sports? Even walking will help. The transition from a non-physical smoker to a physically fit non-smoker is hard initially, but pays big dividends and at your age is very doable. When you can shop all day without actually dropping, you'll wish you had done it sooner! :p

Anyway, quitting is a great Holiday present for YOU, and a bonus for your husband and kids.

Starting before January 1 is also a very good idea. 99% of New Year's resolutions are made to be broken.

Good luck and keep it up. :p

P.S.: Keep posting your numbers. This may give someone else the will to quit.

Good idea Chess9, I think I will edit the title every day. Even just so I can look at it and know how well I am doing. And your right, I am quitting for myself this time. I quit for my kids during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and once it was not so much of a health issue for them (I avoid smoking around them or in the house or car with them) it was right back to it. It is always easier to do things for others, than it is to look at yourself and think "Hey, maybe I am worth the effort too!" This time, it has to be for me.

GF......... I can't say that I know what your going through but my dad used to be a half a pack a day smoker but he (or rather my mom) decided that he should quit because of us kids (me and my 5 sisters).

It was pretty tough on him & he still sneaks 1 or 2 cigs a day but he's been down from these 1/2 pack for about 20 years now. Just remember to take it one day at a time and that if you do smoke up again, don't be discouraged........ start new from that point on. These things take time.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Still going, the true test will be when my husband comes home. He has been smoking while he is out of town. He lights up one around me, and he will be home for the holidays alright, living with his momma. ;)

Skoorb: It never goes away, but usually after the first week or two it improves. It already has gotten better for me. :)

GF:

You mentioned your husband wants to quit as well. Have him join the thread. Maybe others will join. Like this:

1. GF: 5 days
2. GF's soulmate: 1 day
3. Tominator: 1 day
4. Russ: negative 7200 days and counting.

:)

I agree with those that quitting cold turkey is best and with peer support and the pride you might feel in continuing the streak you and others can break this dreadful habit.

My wife's sister died of lung cancer. She choked to death. :(
Not smoking makes a lot of sense to me.

Someone else must be ready to join this thread with GF. Who is it?

Brooks - I was smoking close to 2 packs a day of Dunhills. That was over 10 years ago. I still get the occasional cravings. About once a year I might have a cigarette in a bar when I'm with freinds who smoke. I wake up the next morning wanting one.

That's the really good news about California. No smoking, even in bars.

"quitting smoking is easy, I've done it hundreds of times" :)

Keep up the good work!!!! I'll be joining you on the first.

I have a new "tool" I'm going to try and add to my arsenal this time. I don't know about you, but when I'm really winded I don't feel like smoking.. So when I get the urge, I'm going to run up and down my stairs a few times..

I know people talk about the health issues when someone is trying to quit. (and the effort is appreciated) but I know for me, I've always known the risks, and have had family members pass due to cancer..

In fact, I lost my mother 10 weeks and 4 days ago to cancer. Right before she died I was outside the hospital having a cigarette, after she passed the FIRST thing I did when I got out of the hospital was light a cigarette.

Smoking is chemically and psychologically addictive. Logically, us stupid smokers know how bad it is, but unfortunately, it's deeper than that.

Another tool I'll use for my quitting is the fact that my mother never knew she was terminal, she quit smoking several weeks before she passed, she was hospitalized because she couldn't hold down food, she was diagnosed with cancer (but thought there was hope), went into surgery on a Monday, the surgeons opened her up and saw her entire trunk loaded with cancer and told us she probably had a week to live. She was never told this, and was kept on medication to keep her comfortable, Tuesday (her last concious day) several hours before she slipped into coma, we were talking about her quitting smoking... (because she had "just quit") for no occasion, just woke up and didn't smoke.. and she said she realized when she woke up that morning that she wanted to live.. we continued to talk about other things, a couple hours later she slipped into a coma, and passed away 1:40 am that saturday morning.

Dee:

That's a very poignant story. Reminded me of my sister in law who quit 2 months before she died. I feel your pain in a very real sense.

Good luck quitting smoking and God bless.

Why count the days it will just makes it worse. It's not that hard to stop smoking. Even after a nice big meal.

GF,
I quit some years ago myself, after fifteen years of smoking. I was going through 2 packs or more a day.
The thing that helped me most, was to realize that I had to quit for me, no one else. If I failed, then I failed me.
I hate letting any one down, after I've committed to doing something. Especially myself.
If you truly want to quit, you'll find the strength to get it done. Good luck
