Okay i wanted to build a laptop that could last at least 10hrs while watching movies... so :

Crazy ass Laptop will not have a hard drive
Crazy ass Laptop will not have a Optical drive
Crazy ass Laptop will not have a floppy drive

Laptop screen will be 12" to 15"
Laptop's OS will be kept in some kind of memory card
Laptop will have 2 memory card slots
Laptop will havelow power gpu possible in this ages
I will use Windows xp
Laptop motherboard will be have to be power consumer friendly
Laptop will use a 1Ghz to 1.2Ghz CPU > P3,PM
Ram will be about 128mb to 256mb
Laptop should have a 12 cell to 8cell battery and i am thinking about two better that can take the space of the optical drive/floppy drive :()

What are my chances of that happening :)

I got 2.5K to spend and i am ready to drill and poke hole and take out hardware :)

Money could better be spent on another project.

BUT....if that's what your doing....

I'm not so sure how you plan on storing the laptop in the memory. Cost-effective or not...how do you plan on loading windows? No optical or floppy? Storing the OS into memory is something I usually hear with i-Ram...or i-Drive...whatever it's called. And that's really for desktop use, and not really efficient right now for the price. Hmm...

What else...

Too many questions to ask....Any more info?

Then spend the rest on batteries.

I like his idea. That's what I would do if I had extra money. Buy more batteries...or upgrade laptop to super laptop or something.

Invest in a 10,000rpm notebook harddrive(should there ever be such a thing. hahahaha)

Buy more batteries for it then, if you want to be able to run longer. There's definitely no way to make something exactly like you described. For one, Windows XP is going to either need a lot more RAM to live in or a hard drive to store the swap file. Could be easily fixed by going to Linux, though. The OS still needs to be kept somewhere, too, and I doubt that many laptops are able to boot off of a card reader.

And even if that gets sorted out, how do you actually plan to get the movies to the laptop? CF or SD cards? You'll have to spend a small fortune in one of those formats to even have enough movies to watch for 10 hours.

Eh... screw the laptop if you already have one and buy yourself a nice DLP HDTV and a decent DVD player. Why watch movies on a 12" screan when you can watch them on a 46" DLP for the same price?

Hard drives use a small fraction of the power that an entire system uses. Not putting in a hard disk, floppy, and optical drive won't net you that much more battery life. Much of the power draw (over half or so) go to the CPU, screen, and chipset.

its called u buy a PORTABLE DVD player, or u get a PORTABLE MEDIA Player. Then u buy EXTRA batteries so u can swap after 2-3 movies. Why would u want to waste money on a good laptop, then mod it just to serve as a media player when u could easily just buy one? Also a 12 inch screen isnt much better in movies then a 9 inch Wide screen since u'll lose about 1 inch bottom and top when ur in wide screen aspect. If u truely have that much money to spend, go take your parents out to a nice dinner, or your gf, or take friends out for a few drinks.
