I am BEYOND PERPLEXED! "a network cable is unplugged"....but it is plugged in!!!

Here is the situation which totally stipifies me.

important info: Windows XP and Soyo dragon ultra kt333 w/ onboard lan

2 days ago, I finished building my new computer. I had it at my home and had it running on DSL (which auto sets up everything..plug and play).

Today I brought the computer to school (permament home) and plugged in the computer and I get "network cable is unplugged"!!! My network connection here is "plug and play too"

Here is why I am totally baffled. The original computer at school was replaced with the new one today. I am using the same cable. On the old computer, I was able to auto connect just fine and the cable was fine. On the new comp (that work fine the day before at the other house) says that the cable is not plugged in....and unless I am totally blind, it IS plugged in (yes, at both ends). I have even tried 2 different cables and no luck. I have checked all the bios settings and have even reformatted/installed and still the same problem. I took the NIC from the original computer and added it to the new comp with onboard lan, and it works just fine!!! WTF?!

Any one have a friggen clue? ...any "hey moron, just do xxxx" solutions?

Okay.. here are the details so far.. let me know if im wrong.

Original computer connects and works fine.

New computer doesn't using onboard lan.

Both are connecting to same port. So we can rule out this as being the issue.

We can also rule out the cable because you tried more than one and im sure you tried the cable that works fine with the original computer.

You installed the NIC from original computer into the new computer and it works fine.

That leads to only one conclusion. There is a problem with the new computer Onboard LAN.

Probably a realtek chipset.. probably doesn't even show an LED light where the cable plugs into it.
Uninstall it from device manager and restart computer.. see if that helps.

Will: Home=DSL, School=ethernet, but both are DHCP for plug and play setup

AKA:
Original computer connects and works fine.
-yes

New computer doesn't using onboard lan.
-yes and no. It worked perfectly at home, but at school it doesn't

Both are connecting to same port. So we can rule out this as being the issue.
correct...same port, same cable

We can also rule out the cable because you tried more than one and im sure you tried the cable that works fine with the original computer.
yup

You installed the NIC from original computer into the new computer and it works fine.
yup

That leads to only one conclusion. There is a problem with the new computer Onboard LAN.
but what? it worked perfectly fine the other day and now it doesn't....=(

Probably a realtek chipset.. probably doesn't even show an LED light where the cable plugs into it.
Uninstall it from device manager and restart computer.. see if that helps.
--i have 2 leds..one green and one orange...both are solid when plugged in.
--did that and no luck

thanks anyways guys!

Have you registered the ethernet address fo your nic with the schools DHCP system. Most cable and DSL services use the modem as the identifier on the network. If your on a school's network, you will most likely have to register the nic.

Edit: Oh forgot.. Hey moron register the friggin nic.. just kidding..

ttn1 *L* you nut

ok...problem miraculously fixed..no it wasn't registering the nic. ..and mind you, the solution is just as perplexing as the problem=)
I took out the pci lan card and NOW the MB recognizes the cable. The catch is, i had this problem before installing a lan card--the card was just to get on line to solve the problem on the MB

I just don't know...and frankly don't care as long as it works=)

thanks for the efforts
