I hate it too, but I'm using it more because everyone else is :( At least my smart phone has a full keyboard.

Does everyone who hates texting also hate IM services? It's essentially the same thing, but portable and minus the full keyboard..

I don't use it either. I see it used mostly when a phone call would be inappropriate, in class or in meetings. The texting is just as inconsiderate to the speaker. How about waiting till the presentation is over? Some people do, they don't look at the phone when they get a text, but others will not only drag it out but sit there and reply thinking they are oh so sly.

That said I also used to think texting was rather ridiculous, and still think it is in several ways and manners people use it (like during meetings etc.). However, I have found several instances where text messaging is useful, especially when I want to get a message out to another person without disturbing their work.

I'll send a text message to my SO to update her on when I'll be home but I wont disturb her work or interrupt her if she's with someone else. She can just read it when she can get around to it. A voicemail could work there, but then she'd have to leave her phone off and she has several other people that need to be able to get a hold of her.

Also texting works to send my roommate a message telling him he left his damn alarm clock on and he needs to come back after his class and shut it off :p Again, without actually interrupting the class he's in.

Texting has its uses, and only someone who is just against advancement for the sake of being against anything new would say that there are NO uses for such a technology.

The problem in your project group isn't represented by their desire to text, but rather your group itself.

Those that insist a phone call is always preferred are obviously not very important people and have too much free time.

has to suck to be like that.

anytime someone texts me...it automatically gets deleted.

text me that you're on the pavement bleeding out of your noggin?...too damn bad...guess you're gonna die.

So if you are trying to organize a pickup game of a basketball or a evening out with a bunch of friends you find it more convient to try and call/leave voicemails to 15 different people rather than just sending out a 10 second text message to a group that says "Basketball...5:30 at the YMCA".

Same thing for communication with a spouse. Instead of my wife calling me, and possibly interrupting a meeting at work or not catching me and having to leave a voicemail about picking up a gallon of milk or something after work she can spend 10 seconds and text that to me. I don't have to waste time dialing into my voicemail and going through the prompts and what not. It's just easier for both parties.

Texting isn't inheriently bad. It's just abused by some groups of users.

Works esp well I bet since having a cell phone go off in high school is a suspension in most schools.

Can't you just reach over to his side of the Explorer and shut it off?

To point one, I dont know if you just never went to college, or just not been in any real college, but having a cell phone go off in about any classroom while the class is in session is a severe reprimand in any academic or business environment.

To point two. We're in an apartment. 4 dudes. 2 rooms on each "side" of the apartment. The roommate who does this alot is on the furthest side of the apartment with my other roommate. And when it happens his door is locked because he's gone on to class. If it was just the other side of the Expedition then yeah, I would've taken care of it ;)

You know after all I think it's better the hatchet isn't buried :) You're just so stupid in your posts anymore you don't even try, so stripping down your hopeless attempt at demeaning me and others has almost become an enjoyable hobby :)

So what else does that little brain of yours have in store today? :)

ill give you that, and i text a plenty. but if its complicated, ill send an email.

I send/receive short texts to/from my spouse several times a week. He's not always at his desk at work, but almost always has his laptop with him. He hates cellphones, so he doesn't have one, so a short message sent to his email is frequently the only way to stay in touch with him regarding exciting topics, such as what one needs to pick up at the grocery store or who is picking a kid up from school.

What I find hilarious is when someone accidently sends a text to the wrong person. Such as when my spouse's friend sent 'him' a text message telling him that he'd be late for work because he had to take a crap (I believe he used the phrase "drop the kids off at the pool")...and he accidently sent it to me instead.

I'm not annoyed by any use of high tech except when someone is driving. I am used to people texting, gaming and chatting but I've seen people leaning forward and squinting at the GPS devices on their dashboards.

The other day I was waiting for a shuttle on the mall downtown and noticed the guy next to me had fat thumbs and had filed his thumbnails into triangular styluses so that he could text faster.

Hmmm University of Florida is pretty real, Florida Atlantic University as well...still if you are calling an SO who is only a junior in high school, why would your phone ring?

It's called vibrate/silent mode though...

Pfft. Anti-texting elitists.

If you have a decent phone, it's just like an instant message.

Texting is good for quick communications, for example: "running 5 minutes late, be there soon". It sucks for coordinating more complex events.

Used as it's intended it is a great communication tool. Used the way the idiots in your group use it, it sucks.

But again, you just sound kinda old.

w3rd. my 60 yr old mom texts me a lot to coordinate kid visits and small stuff, but conversations are still either face to face or on a phone. even my kids will call me instead of texting when its more than a simple question.

meh...once upon a time, when every text cost 10 cents...I got spam texts daily. So...I had texting disabled on my phone and have never turned it back on.
I think that in my life, I've sent a total of two text messages...MAX.

At school, I watch the morons walking around texting all the time, not paying any attention to where they're going. Instead of moving for them, I'll just stand still...and let them walk into me. :D

Texting ftw

(Posted from my BB.... So it's got a 'textual' feel ;) ) :p

If I just have a short msg 4 u, this is how I prefer so send it, that is if u r a friend that texts. I'd say only about 2% of my friends text, that I know of.

"Grab skim milk on way home"
"Did u get the mail"
"Hey dude, your team BLOWS"
"Omghi2u... Ou es tu?"

Etc etc.....
