I'm back in school as a 33 year old, and a couple of people want to coordinate group projects solely through text. Invariably they have no f'ing clue what going on and do crap work.

Yes, texting is a fine way to spam your friends with all the stupid crap you do everyday. Texting is not sufficient for documenting and participating in complicated discussions and interactions requiring document exchanges.

People need to beat thier teenagers more.

I'm 30 and I find texting mostly irritating. I share you opinion that it would be a poor way to conduct a project.

That would bankrupt me. I dont text at all (and I dont want to either) and I ask my younger relatives not to send me them because they cost me .25 each. Since you have no other choice, consider a MacTini.

agreed. i hate texting when try to communicate in some worthwhile capacity. for a quick message they're ok, but for figuring things out, especially in a group, they're utterly worthless

#1 - 33 is not old.

#2 - Keep up with technology and the way the young'uns use it. It will help you later whether you believe it or not.

I'm glad no one at my school does this. I guess one advantage of having a campus is that it's pretty convenient to meet up. Even still, you're going to get substandard quality work from students. There are simply people that are more than happy with a C.

I'm glad to use online space to organize, collaborate on work projects, the online whiteboard
sort of thing but the texting craze leaves me cold as well

I'm 40, and I like texting for things that don't require immediate interaction. It doesn't require a phone call, but is needed before you(maybe infrequently) check your email.

I'm 21 and I hate texting.

In fact, I got it disabled on my account. My friends know if they want to talk to me, they can call, and they're cool with that.

You sound like a crotchety old man :)

Texting is good for quick communications, for example: "running 5 minutes late, be there soon". It sucks for coordinating more complex events.

Used as it's intended it is a great communication tool. Used the way the idiots in your group use it, it sucks.

But again, you just sound kinda old.

fuck texting...if you can't take the time to call me and talk to me and actually interact......kiss my ass.

anytime someone texts me...it automatically gets deleted.

text me that you're on the pavement bleeding out of your noggin?...too damn bad...guess you're gonna die.

My biggest issue with texting is that the cell phones that are good for texting barely look like cell phones anymore. I don't want to carry a miniature laptop on my hip.

To me texting is like sitting at a desk with a telegraph key and a telephone and choosing to use the telegraph key.

Texting is good for it's intended use. I text my wife, dad and some other relatives all the time because with our schedules, it's hard to "coordinate" a phone call and a text is easy to send and receive when on the move but that's for small short little conversations. Teenagers that I know, texting has gotten way out of control and for the OP's purpose, I am 25 years old and would have refused to coordinate a project like that via text. Come on, it's college get with the program. Do these people think their boss is going to allow them to do that when they get a job? No! I think when these people get out of college and try to find a job, there's going to be a real culture shock there but I guess everyone has to learn in their own way.
