We are talking about Core Duo benchmarks with *NON* laptop based systems, correct? Not to be trite, but I don't take any benchmark on a portable seriously for the same reason I don't take benchmarks seriously made on my Xbox360
I otherwise would trust Child's benchmarks and feel no reason to debate them given they sound sincere and well executed. This contrary to my natural reflex to dispute any claims made on the Apple platform since they always seem to be "25% faster" than what everybody else is using, for no technically tangible reason other than would make Buckaroo Banzai laugh.
All the benchmarks I've seen with Conroe so far would seem to simply be taking advantage of that 4meg L2 on the bigger chip, which we all know games love. You could put 4meg of L2 on anything for crying out loud and it would scream, so I'm waiting for more complex and I/O intensive benchmarks.
In any case, AMD has been becoming a bit arrogant with their pricing, and Conroe would seem to offset that. However, I'm skeptical about motherboard compatibility, and it doesn't change the fact Intel has nothing to compete with AMD right now.
