I am just shocked how young I am in comparison to the medication I am now taking. It is just shocking because in my mind cholesterol meds were for people like my mother (50+) and not a younger guy like myself.

Anyway, he prescribed Zetia over the others because my liver counts were elevated and it works in the intestinal track instead of in the liver. I have some family history with that and we are trying to get it under control now.

Guess I have to get over that whole I am young and invincible mentality that most young people possess. Reality check FTL. :p

Some people just have a naturally high level. I dated a girl in college who had a level over 300. You would have never guessed it. She ate well, weighed about 130 and looked great. Maybe it's why her boobs were so big ...

Wow that's surprising for a young age. Do they normally do cholesterol checks on people at such a young age?

Yes. I am 23 and started my first real job and I wanted a physical done because I have some heredity issues with the liver.

I'm actually quite surprised they gave you a prescription for that value (218). You probably just got out of college and you probably drank a lot of booze then :)

I'm nearly as young as you, but I'm on cholesterol medication also. However, it doesn't appear that Zetia is a statin, which is good to a degree, because statins have health risks of their own. High cholesterol is a result of diet and lifestyle. I would recommend using the vitamins B complex, niacin, potassium and possibly a regular intake of oatmeal. I understand that oatmeal absorbs cholesterol in the intestines, before it is absorbed. In a way, you are lucky to learn about this early.

EDIT: I nearly forgot, if your friends can handle it, a good regular dose of garlic works well too.

Yes in one regard I am lucky I have recognized this issue at such a young age, but at the same its scary for me to think I am at risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, or a fatty liver. I take these things very seriously.

Oh, I take a multi-vitamin and 2 fish oil tablets every morning. Occasionally I eat oatmeal for breakfast.

Just work out and exercise man. Wow that's bad.

But you can look on the bright side too, now you can make the effort to reduce your cholesterol and lower your blood pressure and to start taking care of yourself.

I don't know about your's, but most multi-vitamins are too weak to do much good. While I would not discourage your concern, life is too short to live with fear. Do your best to take care of yourself, and enjoy your life.

It's not that odd, really. But it does suck to be so young and worrying about your cholesterol. Are you from the midwest? That's a diet that will do it....

take your fish oil, flaxseed, garlic. HOnestly, I don't know why everyone doesn't eat tons of garlic everyday. Vampire-repelling benefits notwithstanding, it really is some good shite.

I agree :thumbsup: I eat tons of garlic daily. It is simply awesome. I don't know what my friends think about it though.

2005:
my chol = 205, hdl = 62, ldl 128. my doctor said my ratio of hdl to ldl is my saving grace.

no meds. just eat more healthy and do some excersise.

2006 (following doctor's advise and did 1 aeorbics class a week for 1 hr):
chol= 189
hdl= 72
ldl =105

Olive oil for the win!!

Maybe there was a particular reason that God had the Jews decorate the Temple with bunches of pomegranates. However, I have never seen pomegranate juice in the stores, where do you get it?

I never said anything about cost, only where he gets the juice. From one article that I read, it only takes about 1.5 ounces per day, so I guess you could just buy the whole fruit in the store and make your own.
