Aren't all USB cables USB 2.0 compatible? I've used sh!tty cables from 1995 and I was able to get USB 2.0 speeds....
In theory the USB 2.0 (highspeed) stuff should be better (more twists per inch, more shielding, etc), but, not that much so that a $25 or $40 cable is going to make much difference. As NFS4 said, the $1 cables he gets are USB 2.0 spec'd as well. If you go with a longer cable length, 10'-15'-25' then you may start seeing some differences between cheap and good. I have a 15' USB 1.1 cable that I bought way back somewhere cheap (first USB Cable I bought) and it caused a bunch of problems, replaced it with another cable and it's fine. That was the only bad cable with USB I've had.
IIRC, B&M stores make their money on those add-on items, the rest of the stuff is minimal markup so that's why they try and push it on you at the register. Such is life and time is money, for that customer $25 for a cable may have saved him a lot more, who knows, not our business.
