Don't you get danger pay? That seems like it sucks, especially since I make $13 an hour for diong regular labor work.

He's 15, he is kinda big for a 15 year old but his muscles aren't that developed yet.

here's a general idea of the program.
The program is designed to prepare the children to live on their own, or return to society, once they tuen 18. For mayn of the kids this doesn't happen. I don't know the actual numbers, but I would say only 1/3rd of the graduated kids successfully rejoined society. Many of them will live outside for a few months and then rejoin an adult group home, some simply transfer. I can't imagine the number beign any higher then 1/3 of the kids leaving and never returning to this situtation.

We attempt to set a schedual and strict rules, that if they follow will be rewarded with special privilages. Keep in mind, that none of these kids has an IQ over 70 (that's the max that we will accept). They have a point and level system. Think of it as an RPG game, if they get so many points for the week they advance a level. If they earn any serious consequences they have to start from the begining (think dieing w/o a cleric). If they earn the highest of levels, they get more time on video games/TV, their first pick of the seat in the car, they earn more money for their weekly allowance, and get special treatment. If they stay on this level for 10 weeks they get either $50 or a big party. At 20 weeks they get $50 and a party or $100. I've never heard of anyone getting 20 weeks in a row, one of my kids had 17 weeks but lost it on his 18th (so close!).

My brother works at the "state hospital" (which is where they send people for psych evaluations or put the 'criminally insane' if they can't be tried for crimes). His favorite one is when the 'patient' will pee repeatedly on a towel, then slap the employees in the face with it when it's good and dripping wet. He asks himself why he bothered to get a BS in Psychology just to get slapped with a piss soaked towel in the face on days like that.

oh
then i retract my clueless input

i thought they were just miscreants/criminals

i have no clue what should be done with them then

good luck!

Good God. That is indeed scary. I guess if you enjoy what you're doing then keep with it. Otherwise, I'd look for something else. I had to quit a job that had excellent pay and good benefits due to the stress level that it caused. Sometimes your life is worth more than your job or any $ can provide. I found a job paying much less but my sanity is here and I enjoy going into work.

I used to do the same sort of work. Very good college job --I'm guessing that most nights you have about 5-7 hours on your own. But it's an easy job to burn out on, which it sounds like you are close to doing.

Sorry for your run-in, I'm sure it's not your first. Lot's of good stories to be had from such a job though.

that is severely fvcked. if i got slapped in the face with a piss towel, i'd jam that towel into his mouth and pinch his nose.

Then after my initial rage settled, I'd probably let him go. But not before "monkey stealing the apple"-ing him.

atleast you go cool stories to tell about your job, and im sure it doesnt hurt with the ladys having a job where you are helping out the kids. The most exciting thing that happened at my job lately was when this guy that looked like the west coast version of Kramer was getting hot and heavy with this really short incredibly obese black chick right in front of my work and i thought i was going to have to shoo them away.

:camera:'s?

Can't these kids be put to work? I guess that's harsh but 70 IQ? You seem like a smart guy, if you want to help people socially why don't you focus on gifted but disadvantaged kids that would really benefit from your great attention?

you almsot got shanked! change the topic title to read shanked instead of stabbed it sounds better.

Forgive my Ignorance at what point below IQ 70 are they considered mentally retarded and not just emotionally slow?

It takes a very special person to be able to handle a job like that, let alone kids with those kinds of issues. It's very stressful, like others have said. Glad you are ok.
The turn over rate in those jobs, can be high, which is a shame, someone has to look out for people like that.

I can understand though, wanting to help, and make a difference in someones life, just too bad they don't pay more for the amount of stress you go through, and all you have to deal with.

I did that same type of job on a Level 3 lock down unit that was very small quarters. The kids could only breath, raise their hand and blink without permission. Yes, the pay is deplorable....At the time, I was also a personal trainer and was quite big and strong, however, we had some pretty scary kids in there. You think you hear it all til a new one comes in and you read his profile. Most of them will not make it, period.

Most places just warehouse them anyway til they are dead or end up in prison when they are old enough.

find another job.

t's a room with nothing in it and a door that can be opened from only the outside, stands for opportunity room).

If that's the extent of punishment, no wonder they're out of control. You need to introduce those kids to hard labor, like digging a ditch all day long. Then maybe they'll learn that they better get an education and work hard. Even if they aren't very intelligent, they can learn a good work ethic.

I think any point below 80 is probably considered mentally slow, and at 70, they're probably officially classified as retarded (not drooling, mentally two years old, retarded, but retarded nonetheless.)

My wife worked at a mental hospital. She almost got killed one day by a woman (who apparently had a LOT of testosterone given her strength) who was in the hospital because she had murdered her parents. I made her quit the next day.
