I'm helping a girl with her computer over email.

She's mentioned using a popup stopper and a firewall already.

I think I'm in love.

/edit....AND she's told me her chipset.

Was? Does that mean you broke up? If so, you're really stupid to let a computer chick go :p.

You gotta start somewhere...

I'm far from knowing "everything", but I always try to help out those who know less.

When I first started with computers I was having trouble with my floppy drive. Periodically it would not read discs. A family friend solved the problem when he pointed out that I putting the disc in upside down.

The best solution is to charge for your time. If it's for friends I want to help, I remind them about my Double For Dumb policy. I gladly help my inexperienced friends, but when I give them good free advice, especially about how to avoid damage to the system, and that friend turns around and does exactly what I warned him not to do, resulting in a trashed system, I charge double my usual rate for fixing it.

It isn't about the money. It's about reminding them that I didn't charge them for the good advice they got the first time, and ignoring that advice received created a lot more work. Asking for more free help to fix it is disrespectful of the friendship.

I hate guys who throw there certs around in technical conversations. Especially the A+ (lol). "Well I'm <blank> certified, and I say the problem is a bad cold solder joint".
