I stumbled on that by accident when I was looking for a good program to password folders for certain users. I'm sure if you spend enough time at an XP-tweaking site you'll find what you need.

I hate how you can't use the keyboard in listboxes like you could in 2000, 98, and 95.

I love XP. The only reason my main machine doesn't run it is because of one piece of hardware.

Windows 2000 is probably the best OS MS has ever made.

I would have to disagree, at least from a gamers standpoint. I have loved XP as it can play games and it is actually stable!!! (well, most of the time) I can actually go a few weeks without restarting. I also like the multi-tasking, I have been playing RTCW while watching a DVD on my second monitor, burning a CD, and listening to MP3's (no, this is not normal for me, I was just trying to crash my machine) It does have issues, but it is my fav MS OS by far as you can game and get work done on it. I got tired of the 98/2k dual boot setup so this is really nice. Oh course, this is all IMO

I like WinXP, but agree that it's fugly. That's why I use Litestepfor one user and StyleXP for the other.

Linux bashers are lame. Besides software support, especially for games, Windows really doesn't have any advantage over Linux, IMO. I still use Windows though, because gaming is my most important concern.

I liked XP at first (once I had a non reporting version) but it just won't run 2/3 of the games I still play. I've tried all the emulator modes, all the patches for all the hardware, no good...just won't fly. And my happauge is nearly worthless on it, can't get anything to work stably. I'm about to go back to 98se until everyone gets on the same page with XP. Then I'll try again.

I'm sure there's a similar option to bring back proper user management, but I have not found it.
Go to start menu, right click on my computer, and click manage. You should see local users and groups which works pretty much like w2k did.

I didn't like XP either till I played around with it for a while. IMO it acutally grows on you, something that most OS's dont do...

<< It actually runs slower than 98 did! >>

Well duh! Why does this suprise people that you take a new OS and put it on the same hardware, its going to be a bit slower. Upgrade your hardware!

I had been running XP for the past nine months and Windows 2000 for about a year before that. For the hell of it, I decided to do a dual boot of Win98SE and XP this past weekend and I found out two things about my Radeon 8500. Picture is even more crisp under Win98SE and Tiger Woods 2002 has run flawlessly so far where in WinXP I was getting artifacts and other strange graphic anomolies while playing. Win98SE also feels faster than WinXP.

<<And furthermore...my Norton progies dont work either with XP !! ARGGHH!!>>

Are you using Norton Systemworks 2001? If so, Symantec has a patch for WinXP. Just do a search for "Norton Antivirus 2001 and Windows XP" on GoogleGroups. :)

By the way, XP rocks! I really like the interface....especially the silver theme.

complain, complain... sure Win98 will run smoother and be compatible with most games... its a simpler OS and software companies have had more experience creating games for it!! When it comes down to it, Mircosoft marches on... and so will the rest of the tech industry... and so will you if you know whats good for you.
Personally, I love XP, more than Win2k and Win98SE. In fact, I even love all the bubbly fluff they put on it! and I don't turn any of it off! We all build these super computers, you might as well flex some fluff muscle.

Just wait, in a few more years, everyone will be complaining about Windows Blah, Blah and will remembering the good old days of windows XP.

Sounds like a bunch of whining brats to me;)

Same cryb babies said the same thing about Win2k when it came out. Don't whine about it, if you don't like it, TOSS IT!!

it's a tad slower, but overall, a plus for me. fast user switching kicks ass.

btw, some old games just will not work w/ the compatibility mode (2k or xp), ie, star control 2 :p

I recently built a new rig running XP and have to say that I like it for the most part. It definitely takes a few days of digging through xp-erience.org, trying the tweaks, reading some more, trying more tweaks, etc to cut away all the crap. I was especially annoyed at how many "helpful" programs and utilities will send/download stuff to Microsoft by default. Otherwise the only annoyance I've not been able to resolve is that it will NOT run Superbike 2001....which happens to be a great game. I've tried all the emulations, etc and it just won't get past the startup screen.

Me too... it doesn't seem very reliable to me.. my support PC has had to be formatted and re-installed 2 times in 4 months and I can't figure out any good viable reasons as to why.. the thing just screws up... once I did a critical update and it got totally hosed, next time the taskbar was all locked up and i restarted to never get my desktop back again.. that was irrecoverable too.. had some ridiculous explorer.exe and dll error... who knows.. it doesn't seem like it will be good in the long haul.. aside from that, it RUNS ok... pretty quick and stuff, nice to work with.. but glitchy too.. I prefer Win2000.

Face it Win XP Pro is just a slow ugly version of Win 2k Pro. i've not tried win XP home so i can't comment there. overall i'd say Win XP home is probably better than any of the Win 9x alternatives. i do have gripes tho. it pisses me off the MS tied the OS into the .net structure, in particular MS Messenger, Ironically enough MS Messenger is the only IM Program i use, but i don't like MS to tying it into the OS like that.

anyway, if i had my druthers, i'd take win 2kpro over winxp pro anyday.

Mimic what PG said. I'd take XP Home over 98SE, but I like the pureness and predictability of Win2K over XP Pro. I've found Win2K gaming abilities to be excellent and stable under heavy loads...XP doesn't offer much but fluff; certainly not worth another $100-$200 when Win2K is already paid for.

I love to here people complain about Microsoft. The truth is they pretty much always give the majority of people what they want.
Every new OS has it's growing pains and MS always fights to give you 50 new features people think they need. I have used MS
products for most of my adult life, and I hope to curb that considerably in the next few years.

Linux is a very capable OS, but game availability is marginal at best. Luckily, I play very few games and not very often.

I would say Linux is my OS of choice, but MS still puts out a very capable product.
