There was some kind of fire that started along i-85 in Atlanta. It looked like there were some barrels and some other construction type items stored under the overpass. Somehow they started on fire and it got out of control with black smoke before the firemen could get close enough to put it out. It looks like so much junk was stored under the overpass that it prevented anyone from getting close enough to put it out. I wonder if it could be arson or possibly a passing motorist throwing out a cigarette or something like that. This is a very suspicious event.

I have seen other overpass areas with equipment stored underneath. However, the overpass was low to the ground and equipment was really packed in there.

Traffic was already terrible before. Should be an absolute fucking nightmare now.

Got another road trip from Michigan to Florida on the horizon. In late December, Atlanta was exponentially worse than normal what with construction going on both north and south of the city. This has just got to make the trip even worse. I think it's going to be alternate route time in May.

Happened here about 10 years ago, major tanker fire on I-95 in Bridgeport CT. The overpass didn't quite collapse, but it weakened enough to sag and the entire thing had to be replaced anyway. Took several weeks to complete and an area that was already a traffic nightmare became a virtual parking lot. What a mess that was.

Everyone knows that garbage doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel. False flag!

Sucks for ATL.

Infrastructure plan? Or are we still kicking out moose lambs and building a wall?

One of the first things the governor said was that this overpass scored 97 on the last inspection, well above the 50-something average of all the others. He said that while he agreed that there was an infrastructure problem for the rest of the state, this wasn't an example of it. Just a freak thing taking out a solidly rated bridge.

i don't think people unfamiliar with Atlanta have any idea just how screwed this city is for months to come. the new Braves stadium just opened north of the city, which was already the worst rush hour traffic in the city and was going to be a traffic nightmare this year. i can't even imagine how many tens of thousands of people just had their commute tripled or more at minimum.

I live here, and luckily I don't have to use 75/85 on a daily basis. For me, it's just more of a hassle when I do need to use it, although I pretty much make it a point to not drive on the highways between 7-9a and 4-7p, before and after the collapse.

For everyone else, it just means planning out the commute to know alternative routes, and perhaps, using our kinda shitty trains, if at all possible.

How long have they said it would take to repair? Media was making it out to be months.... I would hope they would escalate things to do work 24/7.

Also with the monetary cost of this type of damages.... the people caught for this type of arson should have to do a life sentence term with labor included to pay back their damages. Absolutely ridiculous to think this was a smart idea.
