They make good stuff, but I hate them.

I had a SlimX, was very happy with it, until the remote got caught in my bike wheel. I wanted to buy a new one, but it would have cost me an insane amount ($70 CAD IIRC). The thing is that it weighs 20grams, but they wanted $25 for shipping. The thing has NO logic or anything on it (just a PCB and LCD, probably costs them 10 cents to make), but the wanted $35 for it. Outrageous.

Don't like iRiver much. Their products have a lot of features and are nice if they work well, as long as you don't ever need support or a firmware upgrade. Everything about them is cheap, though. The manuals (of the two units I've seen anyway) are in broken english and on their official forums their spokespeople make a lot of empty promises about features and firmware. They don't seem to have good quality control on their firmware sometimes, too.

$266 is a good deal, though.

I have one and I love it thus far. I haven't had ANY problems.

Also, if Best Buy has it that cheap and I bought mine less than 30 days ago, I can get the difference credited back to me, right?

I think I paid $279 for mine, but $13 is $13. :)

Not stories. Personal experience. I owned a SlimX and (very briefly, returned it in 3 days) a flash device by iRiver. The SlimX did work pretty well. One firmware caused addtional pops and crackles, and was corrected later by the next firmware. The unit, which was a cd mp3 player, did NOT play cds properly, only mp3 cds. Regular cds had lots of pops and crackles, and did not sound all that great.

There was another problem that firmware caused, I remember it being a minor one but don't remember the details. It may have had to do with the display on the remote.

As far as the vaporware firmware, frequently there would be a lot of clamoring on their forums because some vague announcement would be made that they are working on something (one thing I remember is OGG support which was always coming soon but didn't show in the 1+ year I was looking).

As far as the unit itself, in my opinion their hadware is fine. Not like the rio karma which has major hard drive issues. When I think of iRiver I think of nice features, reliable hardware, buggy software, and obtuse interface.

Firmware Upgrade (H300-v125.zip: International)

Go to MisticRiver and find out more.

Have they added dumping photos to the iriver yet on that firmware? I am still on 1.02 on mine (orig) and was really looking forward to be able to dump my photos to the iriver.

Just put them in the pictures folder.

yep. i own a flash based mp3 player (ihp-390t) and i agree with everything you said. with a firmware update, they added ogg support, but recording quality was lowered (it used to support 192 kbps i believe, and they lowered it to 96kbps). since i used it for a decent amount of radio recording for listening later, and line-in recording, that change bugged me. i still dont know if its been resolved but i havent checked lately. thats why when i went looking for a hard drive-based mp3 player, i looked elsewhere (decided on the iaudio m3).

the product worked fine though. i just dont like them hyping themselves up and making all these promises, and then not coming through. iaudio has been good about firmware updates. i think they do one every month. if not that rate, its pretty damn close. and since its pretty much bug-free now, most of these updates add new features.

Im talking transferring w/o the computer.... the iriver has a usb in to read from the camera w/o needing to use a computer and it supposedlyis a feature to be added.... real helpful when on the run and run out of space.

USBOTG? Well, they don't send power down the USB port on the US version, but they have a mod to fix it on that site, search for it.
