I had a Scooby-Doo moment this morning. I had my two Great Danes in the back of my roommates' truck today, both attached to leashes that were attached to the middle seatbelt in the truck through the open window.

We passed a shiny brand new red semi on the freeway and suddenly one of my Danes FREAKED out over the semi, "OMGWTFBBQSEEEEMII!!!!" and scrambled up THROUGH the back truck window into the cab just about into my lap. She got her back legs stuck in the window and I was laughing so hard I had to pull over to help get her unstuck. I <3 Danes.

As a result of my mini adventure, I was looking at YouTube for Scooby Doo clips (to illustrate to my roommate the level of "ruh roh!" this semi encounter entailed) and noted that there is a rather extraordinary list of things that 130-200 lbs dogs are afraid of.

Years ago we were training our rottweiler for protection and tracking alongside a Great Dane. He tried really hard, he did, but his heart just was not into it
He was just too nice a pooch.

I love my Great Dane more than any dog that I've ever owned, but he's not always gentle. He bit our next door neighbor and has bitten a lawnmower serviceman without any provocation. Even with this, I wouldn't trade him for the world.

This, and they don't understand how heavy or hard their head is, like when you're bent over tying your shoe and the walk up and whack you with their head because they want some attention.

Do any of you other Dane owners have this happen: My Dane will come over to me, stick his muzzle between my legs, as I'm standing, and push through until I am straddling his back. It's as if he wants to give me a ride.

One of my Danes is afraid of cell phones. She doesn't like the beeping tone of the keys. If you point your phone at her she will back away and then turn and run.

My Dane, Bogie, was extremely calm and not afraid or upset by anyone or anything.

He also knew, instinctively and also personally, exactly how big he was. He NEVER knocked over anything, even when I lived at times in some very small apartments.

Once, the super came in while I was at work to fix my kitchen sink. Bogie was on my bed down the hall and could see him and be seen. The super said when he opened the door and came in and saw him he paused, but that Bogie just kept looking at him, but not barking or even getting up, and the super finally decided OK and went in and fixed the sink with no problem.

Another time, I left him in my VW van in a rough neighborhood in Philly, just briefly, while I went in to get something from an acquaintance. While I was in the house, some kids opened the unlocked sliding door.

I heard Bogie's massive barking and came running out to see the punks scattering, but Bogie had remained inside the van even though the door was wide open, keeping his head while guarding its contents, instead of being lured out and away,

This, just as he stayed on MY bed in that apartment (I was sharing a two bedroom), and would have barked-warned that super if he'd tried to come in there, into my bedroom.

and, yeah, her bones are harder than hell. if she knocks her bony heal into my leg when she jumps backwards from something during a walk, i'll have a welt and bruise for like a month. and her head is ridiculously hard, too.

my dane is extremely protective. one time, at the dog park, the kids ran out towards the gate in order to play on the playground. there was a dog that was chasing after them to get out at the gate. riley thought the dog was chasing after the kids, so she sped up and positioned herself in front of the dog and the kids and blocked the dog from getting any further. she took a stance and anytime the dog tried to get around her, she jumped in its way.

another time, i was chasing the kids around the house pretending to "get them" and they were screaming and whatnot... riley got up from lying on her pillow, chased after me, tackled me to the floor, and held my arm in her mouth. she didn't bite hard, but it was hard enough to leave a bruise. i cracked up so hard. then the kids came over and tackled me.

she's the best dog ever i love riley girl.
