Gatorade is a sports drink. When you sweat you lose salt, and drinking a lot of water while you lose salt can lead to water intoxication. Therefore sports drinks tend to include salt to prevent this.

gatorade has electrolytes in it and is comparable to the water solution that they pump inot you in an IV. it basically just helps it to stay with you longer than regular water

Quote from the Gatorade site:

...sodium can indeed be replaced by Gatorade, but your athletes will still need to ingest a normal diet that contains ample salt. That's because we lose sodium chloride in the sweat at far greater rates than Gatorade can replace it. The salt in Gatorade (no more than in the same amount of milk) helps maintain the desire to drink and stimulates rapid rehydration following exercise.

^ desire to drink = more sales... I really don't remember it quenching my thirst... I just want more and more. Good stuff.

Electrolytes is just ionic particles. Salts like sodium, potassium and chloride, are ionic, or electrolytes. Your body requires these electrolytes to make many reactions, such as sweating and for your kidneys to function.
Gatorade is actually worse for rehydrating than plain water as you feel dehydrated when your salt to water ratio is very high. Drinking water is to dilute the salt. If you drink salt water, you're just going to feel even more dyhydrated.
Kogase is spot on in his information on what gatorade is for - to replenish the salt you lose from sweating.

Salt is essential when you're exercising as are electrolytes. Personally, I carry a bottle of Cytomax and one of water when I go on my 30-40 mile rides.
