I <3 Amex

So, 2 years ago I bought a TV on Black Friday at Costco. On Christmas day, I saw that Fry's had the exact same TV for $500 less than Costco had it, for one day only. So, I returned the TV to Costco (knowing I would give up one year of warranty) and got the TV at Frys.

Fast forward to last week. The TV developed the dreaded thin red line on the right side of the panel. UGH. Tried factory reset, firmware upgrade, nothing. Soooo, with about 4 weeks left on the Amex warranty, I called to file a claim. Faxed them all the stuff they needed (receipt and copy of estimate from an authorized repair center) and waited. The repair of course was $700 more than I paid for it LOL.

Well, yesterday Amex approved the claim, and this morning credited my account the full amount plus the $99 fee for getting the estimate. WOOT!

Off to Costco today to get a new TV. I think Im gonna jump into the 4k pool this time. No idea what Im gonna do with the old one. Might try and pawn it off on CL for cheap.

Anyway, Amex ROCKS!

I can't say I've had to put in any claim with Amex before. Although, under my offer thingy, I got the option to upgrade (looks like just applying for a new card) to their preferred Blue Cash (the cashback on groceries more than pays for it 2-3x over).

If anything, I like the free Shoprunner. It's not as awesome as Prime, but works with Newegg, so good enough 🙂

Yeah free shoprunner is nice. Amex extends warranty on electronics an extra year on ALL their cards FYI.

Yeah I just bought a MacBook Pro and used my Amex for warranty reasons. Now it's covered for 2 years without having to shell out for Apple care.

Wow, that's pretty cool. So AMEX cards will cover a two year warranty on electronics items, independent of any manufacturer warranty?

I guess I'll have to make sure pricey electronics get bought with my Amex from now on

Yes. They will double manufacturers warranty up to one year on any electronics. Cell phones, TV's, receivers, speakers, whatever. In my case, manufacturers warranty was one year, so extended to 2 with Amex. Theres nothing special you have to do (except save your receipt lol). Just buy it with your Amex. Thats it.

So what AE card was it? And you used the other TV for 2 years and returned to Costco?

Not just AE but if you have premium credit cards or World Mastercard or Visa Signature, they will at least double the manufacturer's 1-year warranty with no charge. All you have to do is keep the receipt(s).

Benefits for premium CCs = http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/6-premium-credit-card-rewards-elite.aspx

AE Platinum benefits (just behind the Centurion) = https://www.americanexpress.com/us/...av=us-ccsg-cardshop-cm-viewallcards-learnmore

That's why I purchase almost everything with my CCs for the benefits and then the cash back/points/rewards and then pay the bills in full before the due dates. I only pay with cash in a few instances such as rent (darn landlord), barbershop.

Win-win.

Many, but not all, credit cards add 1 year warranty to whatever you purchase. American Express has the reputation of making it easy on the user to actually get that warranty though. Other credit cards have a reputation for being a bit more frustrating in the process.

I only buy things that might break with credit cards, and thus I can confidently turn down all offers for extended warranties.

There is no "other" TV. Just talking about ONE that I bought just under 2 years ago. I used a Costco Amex for the purchase.

And youre correct. Any Signature Visa does the same thing, but dealing with Amex is soooo much easier.

I used their accidental damage coverage once and that was awesome. Somehow, the back glass on my Nexus 4 cracked about 2 months after purchasing it, with part of the crack encroaching onto the lens of the camera. I filed a claim with AmEx and sent a picture as proof of the crack. They refunded me the full amount and told me to keep the phone. I ended up using that phone for a little over 2 years.

Glad to hear all of this. I was aware of the Costco return policy and the Amex added benefit for warranty. I wanted to offer the following ...

The first flat panel TV that I had bought was a Vizio 42" LCD (pre-LED) from Costco for ~$1300. Some 8-9 months into ownership the video card went wild and psychedelic presentation was at hand. Asked Costco what the best approach was for handling this. They said I could return it for a full refund, or get the manufacture to replace it since it was less than a year old.

I snapped a picture, posted it on a forum, and then emailed Vizio with the link to the forum posting. They asked me, "It it wall mounted?" and I said, "No." While I was not home the wife received an appointed visit whereby someone came in and replaced the unit with a new one. All costs covered by Vizio.

WOW, was I impressed. A year later this second unit had all of its HDMI inputs fail, which made feeding 1080 content a bit limited. Costco didn't care that this wasn't the original unit and again said, "Bring it in for a full refund." They also said, "We don't track serial numbers--just product make/model and membership IDs and purchase dates."

Wow, I was impressed again when they handed me a $1300 Costco gift card, which I turned around an bought a 50" Vizio plasma for $900. I spent the remainder on a Canon HD camcorder. Since then I added a 50" Panasonic plasma and both plasma TVs are still running strong--well outside the two-years of Costco-Amex coverage.

I am buggered though to know how this will be handled since Amex and Costco are no longer friends. Again, the consumers lose.

Their accidental warranty is great too. 90 days from date of purchase if you break or lose the product. I broke my iPhone a few weeks after getting it. Went to the Apple Store and got an estimate and sent that to Amex with my receipt. They credited my account for the cost of the repair. I could have just kept the cash but having a broken camera annoyed the hell out of me.

I have a TV warranty claim in with Discover. Knock on wood, hoping they are as good as my Amex experiences.

As mentioned this is not limited to Amex. This is a standard feature on a lot of the higher end cards, even some no-fee cards. I use Amex, but I also have no-fee MC that has extended warranty too.

The Discover IT and Chase Freedom have 1yr extended warranty and 120/90 day accidental damage polices as well.

Funny this thread is made when I just learned 2 hours ago that Shoprunner is free with Amex.

Bongo (Wifi @ airports) is free with Platinum AE, not sure if it is free lower version of AE cards or not.

A lot of traveling benefits from Platinum AE card.

I've used the airport lounge in every airport I've been in that has one (free drinks and snacks, much nicer private bathrooms). Also the $200 airline credit in bag fees, in-flight food purchases. The yearly $450 annual fee is a bit pricey but I get more than that in return (recently got a $50 coupon at one of my favorite steakhouses from Amex Platinum and the meal was $70 instead of $120).

Good story. I wish that I used a credit card to buy my Kenmore vacuum. Died right after the product warranty expired.

I had the Platinum but wasn't using the benefits so I just dropped to the gold.
