Agreed - I don't think they're mainstream enough to really carry a luxury brand. I wouldn't buy a Hyundai anyway, muchless pay extra money for a luxury vehicle. I'll take an entry level Beamer/Acura/Lexus anyday over a Hyundai. Even a Caddy or a Lincoln or a Chrysler, if you can call that luxury.

More power to them if they can pull it off, but I do not see it happening anytime soon.

if they make something that is technically comparable to say a Caddy but sell it for 20% less they might make a go of it.

I'd like to see Mazda consider a luxury brand again before Hyundai does. Mazda was investing millions to create luxury brand in the US shortly after Lexus and Infiniti launched. I think they were gonna call it Amanti and the flagship was going to be the Millenia, but poor market reaction to their luxury brands in Japan convinced them to kill the project.

Currently Mazda is on the up-and-up, enjoying good sales of its 3 and 6 models (hey, at least they're better than Mitsubishi!)

Yes Hyundai has really been improving over the last few years. BUT they still have a really bad reputation.

If i was looking for a work car i would think about Hyundai. They are good cars and really cheap. But they have really bad re-sale value.

The luxury market is already flooded with too many choices IMHO. They should learn from VW's mistakes. It's too much of a nameplate issue - these buyers aren't going to spend $30,000+ on a Hyundai.

Agreed. Everybody and their brother is trying to move "upmarket". Consumers can move so many units at these pricepoints. Hyundai has to compete not only with with established veterens in the luxury market, but also against other nameplates trying to push upscale like Subaru, VW, and Chrysler.
