Hyundai Equus priced at $58K

The 370Z isn't what I would call cheap. It sells for at least £30,000 once you add a few extras, you can get a BMW Z4 for the same sort of money. I imagine the Genesis Coupe would be below £25k with a decent spec if they sold it here.

In US, as BlahBlahYouToo mentioned, fully loaded 370Z is under $ 40k and base Z430 (3.0 NA N52) is $ 46k. If you want a performance on par with 370Z, you should consider Z435 (3.0T N54), which starts at $ 52k. Probably either we are ripped off by Germans, or treated too well by Japanese I guess. lol

For Genesis Coupe, Hyundai has been priced 2.0T starts a little cheaper than base upper level Sonata (V6/2.0T in US) and 3.8 starts a little more expensive. What's MSRP of upper level Sonata over there?

man Hyundai is all over the map with their designs.

How has their long-term reliability been? I wouldn't drop $60k on one just yet.

LOL, I don't think people who buy these new care about long-tern reliability.

If they are buying MB, BMW, Audi or Jaguar, they won't care. They will think 'I don't care about long term reliability because those shiny emblems are great!' when they see those emblems.

But will those people think same when they see shiny H emblem of Hyundai? 🙂 I am not so sure about that.

The top BMW Z4 with the 3 litre turbo is £44k, only the 2.5 litre engine is under £30k so I guess it's still a bit more than the 370Z for the same sort of performance.

Hyundai Sonata with 2.4 litre engine and automatic gear box is £20k which makes it a lot cheaper than the equivalent Japanese or European car.

Then I think if Genesis Coupe were to be introduced, I'd expect it to be under £25k as you said. That sure looks like a good deal.

Hyundai should just give out a fleet of these cars to Hollywood celebrities, musicians and rappers. In a image conscious society, people will start buying the car if they see those type of people driving it.

I agree that Hyundai should've made a luxury marque (Nissan / Infiniti, Toyota / Lexus) for the Genesis and Equus.

Hyundai is doing well though, I see their new Sonata and Genesis coupe everywhere on the roads these days.

No pictures of the rear, either looks like crap or is a ripoff of another style (my bet is BMW).

That's the problem with the Hyundai brand. Even if celebs drove around in it, no one would buy it. They need to go to Toyota/Lexus route and create a spin off luxury brand.

you guys are missing the whole point. the equus isnt meant to sell - it serves solely as a flagship image boost to the rest of hyundai's lineup. having a 60k car sitting in the showroom means a lot to the prospective buyers of sonatas, elentras, santa fes that are just on the fence and are considering an equally cheap model from kia or mazda.

its the same with the acura RL - no one buys it, yet they keep making it. why? because acura's competitors all have high end flagships and they cant afford to be seen without one

I agree.

They knew they'd sell well in Korea by default. They probably made their money back on startup costs etc based on that alone.

To me, if they started a luxury brand it would lower the Hyundai brand image even further. All they've done is try to fix their image, doing this would be suicide considering where they are in the market.

We all know branding is more important than the actual car to the average person. They need to create a new brand and sell this car under that brand name.

Nice car, I'm sure, but I don't think I could see myself buying one.

Conversations like "Yes, that's my fifty-eight thousand dollar Hyundai" make me cringe and want to hide.

The Lexus LFA is an awesome car, but could you see yourself saying "Yes, I'm the owner of that $300k Lexus"?

If that Lexus had the horsepower and features of a McClaren F1, yes.

Its going to be a hell of a nice car, but how many auto makers have successfully done what hyundai is trying to do? Volkswagon tried, and failed, mazda tried, and failed. Lets see if Hyundai can pull it off.

What car did mazda make? Just curious, I don't know too much about this segment.

They should have spun this off into another brand, similar to Toyota / Lexus.

Unless they can get the price down to the point where it's a great bargain luxury car (~30-35k) for people that are just wealthy enough to want an upscale car but not enough to piss away a bunch of money, it'll be a failure.

I disagree. I will definitely look at this car in 2-3 years. I don't make a ton of money (I'm not going to spend a years salary on a high-end MB or Lexus) but I like the idea of the luxury experience they are offering.

Mazda Millenia
AKA:
Amati 300
Amati 500
Eunos 800
Mazda Xedos 9

They planned on spinning three luxury cars into a new brand called Amati, the Millenia was supposed to be the second of three, although I'm not sure what the other two were.

Wasn't there a 929 as well?

I rode in a Millenia in Japan when it came out 20 years ago. It was very nice. It had a wankel engine in it IIRC.

That's one lame flagship car. Seeing a sedan like this would not make me want to buy a car from Hyundai anymore than I already was. If you want a 'halo' car, go for it, but this NOT that at all.

Did an autotrader search for 2009-10 Genesis 3.8 sedans. You can pick one up with low miles for as little as $25-27K now.

Thanks for the info. Maybe it's just that those were in the 90's but the look and specs don't seem anywhere near what the Equus is offering.

Wrong. People buy the RL and Acura has been selling it for almost a decade now.

I believe Hyundai is trying to shift its brand into the mid-upper tier instead of rolling off a new brand like the Japanese did. I also think they are going to make KIA more like the Hyundai of yester year.

Basically
Hyundai --> Lexus --> Infiniti --> Acura
KIA --> Toyota --> Nissan --> Honda

Me thinks the Genesis and Equus are only the beginning. I guess we will see though

As a side note, KBB says my 3.8L Genesis Coupe Track with 17k miles is worth $28k as a private sale. Thats only $2k less that what I paid after taxes and its not even a year old yet.
