amd is cheaper so I go that way

<< i'd get an alpha for all those fpu intensive things i do >>

I have one of those... a old one though, not very impressive except for size and noise

edit.. saw the comperable prices thing. I will still go AMD because I just dont belive the P4 to be a good processor, if it was a P3 compared to a Athlon then it would be a question.

"So you're going to stick with motherboards that use BX Chipsets?"

Har, guess I am! Still running an AOpen AX6BC in my personal rig, an ASUS P3B-F in my oldest son's box and several family members and friends are still happily running the 440BX. I went for it's replacement, the i815 on my youngest son's PC. Just replaced a SuperMicro ATX TX based mobo in my sister-in-law's PC with a 815ET Pro (MS-6337 V5.0B) and a 900MHz Celeron. That SOB was hell bent on running at 1.2GHz. It booted into Windows and ran that way for 5 minutes before the heat locked it. I finally realized it was running the CPU at 133MHz by default. The i815 is the 440BX of today. It was the most bang for the buck for her at this point in time. I kicked around going to AMD, but I wanted to use her existing 230Watt ATX case, built in video and sound. She was up and running in 20 minutes, with a new mobo, 900MHz CPU and 128MB of memory for under $190.00 shipped. It's quiet, stable & cool, and the built in video and sound were a decent bump up from what she had too. Just great bang for the buck!

My in-laws will be getting a whole new box from the ground up in the 1st quarter. I figure on going for an Intel 845 DDR based mobo, with built in video and sound. I doubt the whole box will cost much over $550.00 including a CD burner! Is it tried & true yet? I think I can safely take the chance with that setup.

You guys keep pushing the bleeding edge for me. I don't mind staying behind the curve a bit. Smooth sailing for me and I save a TON of money and headaches to boot! :p

way back in the day we had this sort of situation... up until intel killed the 486 all the processor makers made the same processor for the same prices and you know what, no one cared what brand the processor inside way. intel's marketing with the pentium (and the fact that there was no real competition for it) made an end of that situation.

Your poll's kinda flawed. The only reason anyone chooses one over the other is because of prices/features, etc. If everything is equal, then what's the point? The one with the "cooler" name, as you seemed to imply? Um, sure, if that's the way you want to choose your processors, go nuts. :D

Hypothetically, I wouldn't have enough money to build a brand new system from scratch.

For me, there is really no difference. I would go with the cheaper of the two. AMD!

I'd also like to say I would get AMD, because they are compatible with my motherboard.

Does this poll have a point?

Basically you're saying "Take away AMD's price advantage AND performance advantage and then choose between Intel and AMD." What' the point of this poll, to see which name sounds "cooler" or which CPU is more popular.

If a 2.0GHz P4 and a 1.6GHz AXP performed the same and cost the same (which isn't so), the one deciding factor would be what mainboards I had to choose from. Personally, I would choose a feature rich and stable board. There aren't really any feature rich Socket 478 boards compared to Socket A, so I'd probably put a 1.6GHz AXP in an nForce board and be done with it. Possibly a Thunder MP if I wanted the most stable board on the market.

Candoman.. hey now!
why not start your own thread about GF3 Cards...

This one is about CPUs :)

Jerboy: how many of these poll are you going to make? One for each component in a computer?

So what kind of JUMPERS do you guys prefer!?!?!

I still am. Of course, they're all dualies, though.

BTW, to be valid this poll should have a "both" option. Not everyone is a zealot. I'm running a 50/50 split between the two right now.

No fair. You are a professional and actually know what you speak of.

Identical performance & identical cost, I'd go with Intel.

If it were the real world and I was building a system from scratch today it would be AMD, no question.

AMD, because I have a Socket A board, I don't have a Socket 478 board.
Hypothetically though:
If I had a S-478 board and no S-A board, I would buy Intel.
If I had both boards I would buy the CPU that fit into the mobo currently in my main box, that way I don't have to switch out mobos.
If I had neither board I would buy the CPU with the best selection of boards.

All other things being equal you pick the CPU that is most economical.
