HyperX memory gone, little help?

Back in 2003, I bought an Abit IS7, and a 1gig kit of Kingston's HyperX PC3500 (CAS 2.0). The machine has been great, with the only issues I've had coming from having to replace the cheap northbridge fan. Ever since I started playing World of Warcraft when it came out a while back, I've tabbed out to see how much memory it was using. Turns out it used anywhere from around 500mb to close to 800mb - scary. But the game always ran pretty smooth, so I didn't think too much about it. Lately I've been thinking about going to 2gigs of memory - 1) because I'm a memory whore, the only reason I didn't get two to start was money issues. And 2) I thought it may help WoWs performance a bit (saw quite a few threads from other people that have gone to 2gig and noticed improvements). This was a fun thing for me to do, since I now have the money.

So anyway, thinking my machine wasn't that old, I went back to NewEgg to grab another 1gig kit, except when I went I found that the only 1gig kits they had were CAS 2.5, not CAS 2.0 - hmm. So I looked up my invoice, then searched for that part number, and came up with this:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-127&depa=0

Out of stock.. dammit. But then after searching this type of memory, I find:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-141&depa=0

And it's in stock, same stuff, same Kingston model number even, but it's CAS2.5. So I call Kingston and they confirm that the older model with the CAS2.0 was in fact "discontinued due to materials." And to top it off, they don't have anything with CAS2.0 up to PC 4200 - all they had was the PC3500 at CAS2.5.

I *should* have waited to post this until I got home, because here at work I can't remember my memory timings (I did that only once when I set up the box), but I'm pretty sure it's *(corrected, timings are 2.5-3-3-8)? I might be way off. Anyway, I'd like to bump this box up to 2gig, but now I'm unsure if I can - I don't know if any other manufacturer makes low latency PC3500, but I did want to ask a question. I'm assuming that mixing the CAS 2.0 and 2.5 wouldn't be good, and if I did, I'd definitely have to slow down my memory timings. I'm not a rocket scientist with this stuff.. I know enough to build my own boxes, but I've been out of touch with the hardware world for about 3-4 years, and I know some of you guys spout this crap off in your sleep :)

Any ideas, other than getting lucky and finding some person with an identical kit to sell? Possible to mix CAS 2.0 and 2.5? Is it even worth it if I could, if I had to slow it down? I have a p4 2.8 just in case anyone is wondering..

Cliff notes:

Have an Abit IS7 with a 1gig Kingston HyperX PC3500 kit (older type, CAS2.0 which you can't get anymore)
Wants to upgrade to 2gig, can't find another manufacturer with same specs.
Curious if mixing Cas2.0 and 2.5 in the same system will be worth it performance-wise, if I have to slow down the memory timings?

Any help would be great, I'll post the true memory timings when I get home, thanks all!

(Edit: Minor spelling errors)

Edit #2: Ok, apparently I've been running at 2.5 this whole time (*smacks forehead*) - must have been one of those "I'll get back to tweaking it later" things. So my last question would be, since I'm running at 2.5 anyway, and I stuck in the latest gig kit that runs at 2.5, and left the timings the same, would there be any performance loss whatsoever? Any problems? Thanks again!

P4 supposedly doesn't care as much about timings as bandwidth. If you "mix" RAM, all of it will run at the speed of the slowest module. You probably won't notice much "seat of your pants" performance difference, either from the extra gig of RAM or from the .5 CAS difference.

If you really want lower latency stuff, look for Samsung TCCD modules on "Brain Power" PCB. Those sound pretty promising with a voltage bump.

I have seen the older faster cas 2.0 stuff on the FS/Trade Forum from time to time. You could put up a "WTB" and try your luck. I saw a 512mb cas 2.0 stick go for $85 a week ago.

Thanks guys for the responses.. I think another friend made a good point, that the money would be better spent towards a new machine. And Zap, yeah I was wondering about the performance increase, thanks for your input.

Kilrose, I almost did that yesterday :) Kind of glad I didn't I guess. Thanks again for your help guys!

What performance increase? Unless you live by benchmarks, IMO you won't notice any difference in RAM (except for T1/T2 with A64) unless it helps your overclock.
