HyperThreading Qs

I was messing around with WCPUID, and I noticed something that caught my eye. I went to the "Feature Flags" section, and "Supported" right next to HyperThreading. The reason this struck me as odd is because I have a P4 2.53, B0 stepping, and to my knowledge HT is not enabled on these chips. My motherboad (GA-8IHXP) is supposed to support HT with the latest BIOS, which I have, but I see no option to turn it on. So which one is reporting incorrectly here: WCPUID, Processor, or the BIOS?

Your chip does have Hyperthreading, but it was blown at the fab. Intel is waiting till the 3 gig chip to leave it enabled.

Any way to force my BIOS to enable it, just for shits and giggles? And can anyone out there with a P4 2.53 check if WCPUID reports HT enabled?

LOL, if you know how to take CPU apart and connect correct wires which are the size of just a few atoms, I'm pretty sure you can than enable HyperThreading in your P4-2.53 CPU 🙂

And if u manage to do that....do take the time to post the "steps required to convert a p4 2.x to support HT" here.... ;-)

Hmm, I just realized something. Considering my chip doesn't support HT, but the HT bit is set in the Feature Flags, how does my BIOS know it doesn't work?

Turning it on in bios wouldn't do anything. All turning on HT in bios does is tell the processor to use HT but the processor can ignore the bios.

Well, I decided to mess around with my BIOS to try to force it to do HT, and all I got was my computer not starting. I had to short some pins on the main bios to get the backup one on my 8IHXP to kick in. I thought I wasn't ever going to see that MB start up again for a while there too. But at least I'm sufficiently satisfied that there's no way to get HT to work on my 2.53.

lol clearing the CMOS, something everyone should learn how to do before screwing around in the bios 😉
