So, i have my duallie Xeon 2.8 ghz running finally as a workstation.

but here's the funny part, because hyperthreading is enabled, when i open up task manager it shows 4 cpus. :)

i guess 4 is better than 2 when multitasking.

damn, mb i should have put a server OS on this and seen what it would do performance wise with 3 or 4 people logged on via terminal services. :)

do all P4 Xeon processors have HT capabilities, or do the CPU's have to be 800mhz? i have a dualie P4 Xeon 2.0Ghz (not 800mhz) that i still haven't opened yet, and i was just curious. thanks.

ROFLMAO!!!

was wondering when the smart aleks would show up.

:)

ok, so it ISN'T Funny.

my reason for posting this was that when i went to task manager and saw the 4 cpu monitors it kind of threw me.

Run a couple parallel programs on it and see how it compares with a system that has four actual processors.

I think only Q3 engine games do... and ask people if it works correctly.
never got my friends dually rig running Q3 properly using SMP.. what a pain.

Hyper-threading is a step in the right direction of optimizing the CPU, but we're still far away from lower speed CPUs that perform more efficiently then today's 3-4 GHz processors.

I hate you. Seriously. I do. Luckily I don't get easily amused at things that are DEFINITLY not funny.

That is actually the expected behavior. Hyperthreading is using the integer and floating point units to process commands simultaneously. Windows "sees" each hyperthreaded processor as 2 processors.

In reality, each processor STILL can't do two int or FP ops simultaneously. It's not a magic bullet. For correctly optimized applications, it could be very useful. For others, it will be negligible. In some cases, it will be a performance hit.

They all do.
There are no Xeon's with 800 MHz FSB though, the DP Xeons top out at 533 MHz FSB and the MP's at 400 MHz.
