I am trying to connect to an external modem on COM1 and i need to dial a number. For some reason the field to enter the number is grayed out. Is there a way to gain access to this?

Open Hyperterminal, Go to File, New Connection, Select the Telephone Icon .. It will come up with a settings screen including how (Touchtone, pulse, +1) to dial, along with a box to enter the phone number. Give your connection method a Name and Save it.

That's what I was doing but it's greyed out.

Though, here's a dumb question, do I need a modem to dial out, or just a com port? Basically I have a modem hooked up to a physical machine, the modem is on com1, and I have com1 mapped in VMware to a VM, and I'm trying to dial out from the VM. Apparently this worked before, I don't even get how it would as a com port afiak has no sense of "dialing", which may be why those options are grayed out for me.

I think you need an internal modem for it to work. Never really looked into it as both my laptop and desktop have modems in them. (even though I no longer use them) .. If you want to dial an actual telephone #, you would need a modem and phone line connection.

Did you setup the default dialing rule set in Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options?

I have a "my location" setup if that's what you mean. I think this is actually an internal line, as I just need to dial the extension to get to the pager system. From my understanding the PBX is just emulating POTS on that line, but I may be wrong. If I plug a regular phone in I get a dialtone and i can dial the number that is configured and I get to a "fax" sound, so i'm guessing this is where the hyperterminal data would take place.

I managed to connect to the modem. Have to connect to com3 then type ats and i get an ok, then I can do atdt<number>. Only thing from this point I still can't seem to get the endpoint to work (should be like a telnet session). There's probably some mode settings I need to input. Any help would be appreciated.
