The site's called Hypertechcomputers.com, they sell top-of-the-line gaming laptops at impressively low prices: Just over $2000 for something with a 3.06 GHz P4, 512 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive (which the sales rep I e-mailed tells me is 5400 RPM), a UXGA (1600x1200) display, 64 MB Radeon Mobility 9000, and DVD-RW drive. This would be selling for about $3000 over at Alienware, and certainly well over $2000 at a generic Sager dealer like Powernotebook.com. (I am assuming that these gaming laptops are also of the Sager family, ala Alienware and Hypersonic...) The one caveat is that no OS is included, although even paying them extra to install one for you doesn't raise the price up to anyone else's level.
So I'd place my order right now if it weren't for a few things that worry me. First off, there's nothing on ResellerRatings.com for Hypertechcomputers.com, which refers to itself as "Hypertech Computers"; however, if you go to www.hypertechcomputer.com (singular), you'll find a company by the name of Hypertech Computers, Inc. that does have a very high ResellerRatings.com rating. Pretty worrisome, but then, maybe www.hypertechcomputers.com is just new; not sinister, just trying to undercut more established companies. And the name thing could be coincidence.
Second thing: I e-mailed their sales department, and the reply I got wasn't in very fluent English. Okay, I guess we all saw this coming. No ratings I can find for this company (or, better yet, reviews of their products -- it's certainly possible to screw up in the process of building laptops), and their customer service is almost certainly outsourced to somewhere in Asia. Also, I didn't get a direct reply to my question about their policy on dead pixels; but then, most companies don't seem to have an official policy on this matter, either.
I'm planning to get a high-end laptop soon, so I'd like to know if anyone knows anything about this company.
Also, on a slightly related note, I'm curious as to whether there's any difference between the 64 MB and 128 MB Mobility Radeon 9000 models, other than the obvious. I've seen laptop customizers who charge $200 for the 128 MB over the 64 MB, and I've seen others (like Alienware) who offer only the 128 MB version. Last I heard, 64 MB was more than enough for games. Is the 128 MB model a higher clock speed? Any info on this would be useful in determining how hot of a deal some of these laptop companies are.
