Hypertechcomputers: Great deal on gaming laptops?

The site's called Hypertechcomputers.com, they sell top-of-the-line gaming laptops at impressively low prices: Just over $2000 for something with a 3.06 GHz P4, 512 MB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive (which the sales rep I e-mailed tells me is 5400 RPM), a UXGA (1600x1200) display, 64 MB Radeon Mobility 9000, and DVD-RW drive. This would be selling for about $3000 over at Alienware, and certainly well over $2000 at a generic Sager dealer like Powernotebook.com. (I am assuming that these gaming laptops are also of the Sager family, ala Alienware and Hypersonic...) The one caveat is that no OS is included, although even paying them extra to install one for you doesn't raise the price up to anyone else's level.

So I'd place my order right now if it weren't for a few things that worry me. First off, there's nothing on ResellerRatings.com for Hypertechcomputers.com, which refers to itself as "Hypertech Computers"; however, if you go to www.hypertechcomputer.com (singular), you'll find a company by the name of Hypertech Computers, Inc. that does have a very high ResellerRatings.com rating. Pretty worrisome, but then, maybe www.hypertechcomputers.com is just new; not sinister, just trying to undercut more established companies. And the name thing could be coincidence.

Second thing: I e-mailed their sales department, and the reply I got wasn't in very fluent English. Okay, I guess we all saw this coming. No ratings I can find for this company (or, better yet, reviews of their products -- it's certainly possible to screw up in the process of building laptops), and their customer service is almost certainly outsourced to somewhere in Asia. Also, I didn't get a direct reply to my question about their policy on dead pixels; but then, most companies don't seem to have an official policy on this matter, either.

I'm planning to get a high-end laptop soon, so I'd like to know if anyone knows anything about this company.

Also, on a slightly related note, I'm curious as to whether there's any difference between the 64 MB and 128 MB Mobility Radeon 9000 models, other than the obvious. I've seen laptop customizers who charge $200 for the 128 MB over the 64 MB, and I've seen others (like Alienware) who offer only the 128 MB version. Last I heard, 64 MB was more than enough for games. Is the 128 MB model a higher clock speed? Any info on this would be useful in determining how hot of a deal some of these laptop companies are.

I didn't read all of that but a word on gaming laptops. If it has a regular desktop model cpu then I hope you don't plan on using batteries much, big power drain. Not sure about how great the company is either. good luck

the laptops you are refering to are sager laptops, made by an ODM called clevo (clevo also makes the alienware laptop model, or did before the latest change). if you want one of these for less with a good dealer, try www.powernotebooks.com or www.pctorque.com . they have eceptional resellerratings (i ordered the 5660 from pctorque in febuary for $1800 maxed out). the models that hypertech are selling are the 8886s (i beleive) and should not cost that much as they are old models (the new ones have 128mb radeons, and soon to have radeon 9600pros) . if you want more info on these laptops, try sagerforums.com

IHoldings has been around since 1998. LowestHosting.com has been around since 1999. The prices aren't too bad and a few of the laptops look like Sager models. If this doesn't look like it's for you check out. PowerNotebooks.

Those are some really nice systems. A fully decked out 3.06GHz laptop for under $2200 is amazing. Do you know when they're coming out with the Radeon 9600 versions?

Thanks for the info.

Yeh, A friend of mine just spent $3000 on a Alienware lappy. He even went for the dual batteries. One hell of a machine but it only lasts an hour (While playing games) MAX.... And that's off both batteries.

last i heard the radeon 9600pro variants were due july/august, no later than september. the 88xx series will get the r9600 first, with the 56xx series getting it a few weeks later. also as for battery time, it should last longer than twiceover specified. i have the 5660 (r9000, 2.6ghz p4, 60gb drive, 1gb ram) with only 1 battery and i get 1.5 hours out of it. the people that use the dual battery setups get 2.5 to 3. use the link i gave you earlier (www.sagerforums.com) for more information, its what helped me decide on my laptop several months ago.

Damn that sucks. My Dell 600M can last 1h30mins on 1 battery playing WC3 on everything medium... ATI 9000 good enough.

See how they only use paypal? That is a bad sign in my book. Not to mention that their web site (the overall design) took about 10 minutes to produce, excluding actually putting the systems on there.

To add to what II said...the M10 will be out late July/Early August and feature the 800mhz FSB, DDR400 and ATI 9600 as well as supporting the 3.2ghz processor. I would also look at www.powernotebooks.com to see what options and prices they have. They also sell Sager and their customer support is excellent. Check out www.resellerratings.com to see why they get a 9.8 out of 10. I know this as I have purchased 2 laptops, a NP5660 (2.8, 1gb ram, 40gb 5400rpm HD, 128mb ATI 9000) and a NP8887 Force (3.06 with Hyper, 1gb ram, 40gb 5400rpm HD, 128mb ATI 9000 and 16.1 LCD) and have been very pleased with them both. I am now waiting on their new one that is coming out in Late July/Early August which is the NP8890. Before I purchased I researched all the makers of laptops, Dell, IBM, Toshiba, Sony, HP, Compaq, Gateway, Alienware(Same exact equipment as Sager) and was not able to find one that provided me with as many features and power for the same price as the Sager. Their customer service is outstanding as well. The have been given a 9.8 out of 10 on resellerratings.com. Before I dropped alot of cash on any laptop I would check out all my options with this being one of them. I think you will find it was a very smart choice. Hope this helps.

Sinestr, PowerNotebooks is good I've been looking at their services and products for a month now but I think I've been wooed (sp?) away to http://pctorque.com/. Rating of 10 at RR.com and lower prices.
