Hyper 212+ and cpu temps on 2500k question.

Just bought a Hyper 212plus with two lian li ball bearing fans at 1300rpm set up for push pull. I have 1 rear 120mm exhaust fan, 1 front 140mm intake fan, 1 side fan 120mm all around 1300 rpm to 1600rpm. It is 100 Fahrenheit degrees outside give or take and I'm running Prime95 so far for almost an hour and the average temps are 57 degrees celcius. The cpu is overclocked to 3.8ghz, how are the temps for that? At night when it cools down and my room gets nice and cool I expect a few celcius to drop maybe around 5 degrees.

My ambient temp is around 86 degrees Fahrenheit according to my thermometer. So that would be about 30 degrees celcius.

Setup: Core i5 2500k. GA-P67-UD3 F3 BIOS Rev. 1.0. MSI Gtx 560 TI Twin Frzr II at 1000 Core clock and 2000 Shader clock and 2020 Memory clock with a 1.087 voltage. In a Aerocool PGS-V Case. Gskill Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x2GB.

57C I'd say your golden

What kind of grease you use and method of application? That can change temps slightly depending on what you used and how you applied it...especially the application itself.

I used Noctua NT-H1 and I put about a dime sized blob in the middle of the middle of the cpu as I pressed the heatsink down...quite hard lol I was afraid it would snap. Then I justr twisted it back and forth for a good 3 seconds and pushed it down again and I could see some of the compound coming out the sides just a little so I was satisfied with it.

I actually just oc'd further to 4ghz with a core voltage of 1.24 and ran Prime 95 all night for a good 14 hours and woke up and no errors at all and the temps were at 55c on average for the first and 4th cores with the second and third core at 60c on average. Pretty happy with it, I will run it again around 2pm when it starts to heat up outside and I expected the temps to remain at around 62c on average max 65c. So yep Im pretty happy with this, if I wanted it any cooler I would have to pay at least 20 dollars more and up. Great cooler I say.

Dime sized pile of goop is a lot. You might benefit from re-applying your paste. How much I couldn't really say, but if you've got excessive amounts of paste in there it's probably not helping. If it was squishing out the sides of the CPU that's a pretty good sign you used a bit much.

I personally always spread a thin layer across the IHS. It's easy to just cut a piece of cardboard or use a razor or something flat to spread the paste. No real need to twist or anything like that. Just spread a thin layer on the CPU, put the HSF on and tighten it down. The pressure alone is enough.

Your temps don't look bad, I'm just saying it might help a little. Heh, my 920 idled in the 40's on air in your ambient temps.

-edit-

Think of it this way. You're not trying to create a layer in between the CPU and the HSF. Paste is just meant to create a better contact. You're really just trying to fill in the imperfections on the surfaces of the IHS and the HSF so that there aren't air pockets or areas where there's no contact. If you think of it that way, it helps to let you get a grasp on how little paste you really need.

I actually had done that before and the temps had been around 4c higher probably because of air bubbles I might redo it but I've heard of doing it both ways. If I can do the layer with a card better than before it might actually work better.

Just an update, at the time I created this thread and the setup was freshly installed, my temps were:

i5 2500k at 4ghz:
Ambient Temp: 86c
Idle Temp: 37c-40c
Prime95 Full Load Temp: 62c to 65c

5 or so days later, the thermal compound seems to have settled nicely and the temps are now:

I5 2500k 4ghz
Ambient Temp:87c
Idle Temp: 30c-33c
Prime95 Full Load Temp: 55c-57c

A drop of a good 5-7c all around.

Very happy with the Hyper 212+ and the Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Compound!
