HVAC: 14x24 vs 14x25 air filters?

why 2 diff sizes that are so close together?

why build a new system that uses an air filter thats only 1" bigger (or smaller) and waste time/energy/$ designing it?

Its not the system its just the housing. You can remove the houseing and install larger/smaller if you like.

I have 3 filters; my main being 20x30 and then that feeds off to 2 other filters that are 16x20 and 12x12. I could remove the hosuing and change sizes but what i have fits and does the job.

More options are better not worse when building homes.

Because 1 manufacturer's standard size isnt' the same as someone else's? It's easy for the filter guy to make both sizes.

An actual reason may be one's a US/imperial size, and the other is really darn close to a metric size.

I have 3 myself but 2 are 14x30 and a single 12x12...anyway do you actually buy 12x12 filters? Everywhere I can find them they are fuck-all expensive so I just buy 12x24 and cut them in half😱

Yea lowes and I think homedepot have 12x12. I use the cheap pleated filters. Good filtration but no major loss of pressure.

I've only been able to find them at Home Depot and they're lie almost $20 each for the pleated ones..I can grab a 3 pack of the 12x24 for less than $10 and get 6 out of it. I just don't get the pricing. I'll have to do the math on that special though...

Yea it was $53 for 12 20x30 filters shipped. The $10 coupon works on them as it adjust based on the orignal price not sale price.
For cheaper/smaller size filters it may not be as good deal.

My wife is concerned with allergens, so we always buy the most expensive. I can't believe how much I spend on filters a year.

I think it's 2400 micro particle rating that we buy, designed to even pull bacteria out of the air, to prevent viruses. WTF. She sees that and has no issue spending $200/year on them.

The 1000 red filters will work for pollen and allergies and seem to be the best bang for the buck. 12 for $50ish shipped is good for larger sizes.

Hmm... similar question. If I have a setup that's designed for 1" filters, any reason I shouldn't pop off that bracket and put in a 3" filter? Would they work any better? Last longer? Make the furnace explode?

3" filter? Pretty sure your blower would be dead in a few months trying to suck air through something that thick when it's not designed for it.

They also make your blower work harder to pull air through so you're paying more in electricity and wearing out the blower faster too...

Seems to be the way it always be. Our furnace is 45yo and uses the 14x25 size.

Swamp coolers are even worse for pad sizes. 28x28, 30x30, 30x32, 32x32, 32x34, 32x36, 34x34, 34x36...

You have to change the entire housing.

The "thicker" filter can filter better but can also put more strain on your system. If you run one make sure to put in the largest length/width you can and don't run anything higher than a MERV12. MERV 12 seems to be the point where it really puts a strain on the system.

So IMO its not worth it unless you need a special filter. I would just run the Filtrate1000 or MERV 8-10 filters. I ordered the 1000 series filters for my house.

A 3" filter is going to have more filter surface area (the pleats are deeper) resulting in less static pressure loss.
