My new Zacate build came about primarily because I got a really nice deal on the ISK300 case from Amazon a short while back. I wish the rig was dead silent, but that tiny cpu fan is still much quieter than what I would have expected. With the smart fan controls enabled for the cpu fan, it's perceptively quieter than the 80mm case fan.

Parts list:
$110 - ASRock E350M1
$33 (normally ~$70) - Antec ISK300-65
$25 AR - Patriot Signature DDR3-1333 4GB
$11 - Hornettek HT-H5DN Wireless 300Mbps 802.11n USB 2.0 High-Gain Adapter
Re-using - Seagate Momentus 7200.2 120GB 7200rpm 2.5" HDD
No optical drive, though there is room for a slim drive
Already own a license for Windows 7 Pro x64

Cost was relatively low for me, since I already had a couple things on-hand and I got a great deal on the case, but it's kinda scary that the license for Windows would have been about the price of the rig itself. I wonder if Ubuntu has software support for the Zacate platform, including capability to enable hardware acceleration for video.

My primary concern with the E-350 is its slowness, if the video I'm trying to play won't work with hardware acceleration. When I tried watching the The Muppets Official Trailer at 1080p, it stuttered horribly (roughly 90-100% cpu utilization). However, it seemed to have played the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" Trailer 2 at 1080p just fine (roughly 75% utilization). I can't even really tell if hardware acceleration for flash was actually working. Maybe it wasn't, since cpu utilization was so high in both cases. Fortunately or unfortunately, my internet isn't fast enough to stream 1080p flash video, let alone 720p, so I suppose I don't really have to worry about that much. (Flash version 10.3.181.26)

Outside of flash, the HD6310 IGP works with DXVA just fine.

I was originally going to use an old Belkin wireless G USB2.0 adapter or eHome wireless G USB2.0 adapter, but both were just useless. The Belkin has issues getting any kind of reception unless it was sitting next to the router, and the eHome adapter simply didn't have drivers for Windows 7. Well, they were really old anyways.

Fortunately, that cheap Hornettek adapter works great. Windows had drivers for it, so it was just plug and play, and reception is excellent. It's good to know that the giant antenna isn't just for show.

There has been only one major problem so far. I'm not sure what the cause is, but the computer sometimes refuses to boot after it goes to sleep. I would have to disconnect power, plug it back in, and then it will wake from sleep. For now, I just avoid using sleep and go for a full shutdown.

Power consumption is excellent as expected. It makes me glad that the case deal was for the 65W version. From this review, the 150W model's PSU is much less efficient. I forgot to jot down the PFC, but it was about 50-60% or so, like in the review. A bit disappointing, but power consumption is rather low anyways.

Idle: 18-19W
Prime95: 25-26W
Furmark: 29W
Prime95+Furmark: 31W

Temperatures:

The max column would be the temperatures after running Prime95 and Furmark for about 15-20 minutes.
The current value column would be idling for about half an hour.
Ambient temperature was 27C.

I should have taken more pictures, but here is what I have:

Nice! At $33 I would also have bought a spare ISK 300-65. Guess I missed out on the deal.

Silent PC Review aren't very positive on any Antec fan. Their review of the ISK 300-65 said in the "final words:"
Our single biggest complaint is about the fan. It has a nasty sonic signature.
You can probably find one of their recommended fans to make it more quiet.

For the CPU fan, since it is a normal 3-pin and you seem to have a bit of space over it, you can probably remove it and find some quiet fan to rig over the two heatsinks, plugging it into the CPU fan header for control. As an added bonus, doing such will get direct airflow over the CPU since the fan motor (airflow dead spot) can be positioned so it isn't mostly over the CPU. There are also some slim fans on the market, in case a normal 25mm thick fan won't fit.

I did something similar with my server, which used a Gigabyte ITX board with Atom D510. The little 40mm fan was too noisy. I used a 40-60mm fan adapter (many e-tailers have them) and a slim 60mm fan. I then used a pre-made resistor (purchased online) that is a 3-pin pass-through to make the fan even quieter. Stupid Gigabyte made the BIOS fan controls not work - can't even control the stock fan, let alone my replacement.

Hmm. I'm listening to streaming radio right now, taking about 35% CPU time, and I just watched the Muppet trailer in 1080P, and I didn't notice any stuttering. I had Task Manager open, and CPU time was like 70%.

One thing that I've noticed with the Zacate rig and YouTube. If I click 1080P, and THEN click full-screen, it's choppy and stutters. If I click full-screen, and THEN click 1080P, it plays fine. Might try that. Clicking full-screen again, may cause it to become choppy again.

Wierd. I am using the same mobo as you, and I don't have any problems with sleep mode. I let Win7 64-bit put my system into sleep mode after 30 mins, and it wakes up just fine. (Although, sometimes, if I'm quick to click in the browser, the first link I click comes up with a page not loading error. Probably because the network takes a few seconds to re-initialize.)

Lower power consumption than I'm seeing, but again, I have a desktop HD and DVD drive installed.

I don't think I'll buy any replacement fans - trying to keep cost down, but maybe I could replace the cpu fan with a larger spare I have. I like your suggestion!

I'll give it a try!

When I first got the E-350 and mobo, I didn't have the laptop HDD available, so I connected an old desktop WD Blue I had laying around. That alone increased power consumption of the rig by about 6W or so.

I seem to be having trouble with mine. When I let it go to sleep after a period of inactivity (30 min), and then wake it by clicking the USB mouse left button, I find that sometimes, the PS/2 keyboard does not work.

Finally got the rest of my parts for the Zacate build. Still haven't had time to install OS just yet.

Initial thoughts - does seem to run a bit hot (BIOS idle 58~60C). Since I haven't put load on it yet, this does worry me. Im using the Asus fanless board, so I expected it to be in the high end, but 60 idle, that only leaves 30 C before max.

Ofcourse an option could be to turn up the speed on the ISK-310-150 case fan, but I really don't like the noise pattern on medium or high setting.

So a few questions I hope for some input on:

1) Zacate idle temps - could it be a bit on the high side because (maybe) K8 CnQ hasn't kicked in when in BIOS? (Assuming that Zacate has K8 CnQ)

2) Anyone with passive cooled Zacate, that has some experience on what kind of load temps I should expect? What's a typical increase from BIOS idle to full load?

3) Anyone with the Antec ISK series case that has succesfully replaced the stock fan for quieter operation.. and if so what did you replace it with? (I'm thinking Noctua NF-R8 myself, but very open to suggestions)

If I'm paying $110 for a mobo with a such a cheap and low power cpu, I expect it to sleep without any issues.

Haven't had any more trouble with the keyboard and sleep mode. I started waking it up using the keyboard, rather than the mouse.

I confirm similar issue with my E-350 and flash version 10.3.181.26 on Windows 7 x64. When i start playing a youtube HD video and switch to 1080p while video is still minimized then full screen it, the CPU usage stays high (80-90%) and causes stuttering, skipped frames. If i full screen it and then switch to 1080p stream, the video plays smooth and CPU usage stays around 30%. Weird! It seems that GPU acceleration doesn't kick in in the first scenario. BTW, there is a nice utility called "AMD System Monitor" that you can get from AMD and it will show you real-time CPU and GPU utilization on your E-350.
