Hi everyone,

First off, due to time constraints, I work out a home with dumbbells. I do not have a bar bell because I live in an apartment so space is limited. Only other thing I have is a bench. Just as an fyi.

Anyway, I was doing decline benches on Tuesday night when my damn leg slipped off the padding and lost balance of my left dumbbell and hurt my back portion of my shoulder due to the uncontrolled pressure. I took two days off and didn't lift again until today. I did some dead lifts and it only hurt slightly. I started doing some squats (again, with the dumbbells) and the pain was unbearable so I stopped.

My question is, since all the work outs I do pretty much involves my arms (thus putting pressure on my shoulders), how long should I rest it? It only hurts slightly when I stretch it which I think is normal but I don't want to keep hurting it when I lift. Any input would be appreciated! :)

i would wait a week and see how it feels after that. do some cardio or something in the interim. it may take longer, best not to push it.

i wrecked my motorcycle 3 years ago and dislocated my shoulder, it took almost a year to be functional again, but i kept messing it up during that year.

its best to let it heal completely or else you'll keep injuring it again like my dumbass did.

once pain subsides, give it another week or so. pain goes away long before it is completely healed.

I hurt my shoulders while doing pull ups. Recovery period was like 2 weeks before I was able to do 1 full pull up.

Second others on taking it easy. Being patient w/ injuries will only result in less missed training time in the end. Meanwhile, RICE (rest, ice, compress, and elevate). If you can, 20 min on, 20 min off icing will work wonders.

With an injury like this, you will likely have to take more than one week off (from working that shoulder at least). Icing it and taking ibuprofen (especially at night before you sleep) will help quite a great deal. When it doesn't hurt without weight, you can start doing some unweighted movements to strengthen it. If it still hurts or comes back very quickly, it's probably in your best interests to go to a physical therapist who can give you some exercises and stretching techniques to facilitate healing. Good luck, bud.

Thanks guys for the tips. As of right now I am just trying to rest it and not putting any kind of weight on it. Slight stretching hurts a little but it's nothing I can't deal with. I'm just bummed about it but yeah I will see how it feels in a week.

I feel your pain man. I've been dealing with chronic lower back pain for the last few years.

I always feel great when I'm doing squats and deadlifts. Then when muscle soreness sets in and something always get tweaked a few days later. I'm not smart enough to stop lifting long enough to let it heal. Must..... Move.... Iron.......
