Hurt Cat

I got back from my GF's house this morning and couldn't find my cat (Pounce). I didn't think anything of it at the time so I went ahead and got ready for work. As I was leaving I looked in my neighbors yard across the street and I saw a blackish ball curled up. At first I didn't really worry but something in my head told me to go check it out. Turns out it was Pounce. He was sittin on his hind legs and had his chin on the ground. He had dried slobber all over his fur and some blood.

Well I rushed him over to the vet and they started an IV on him. The whole way over there and while we waited he moved very little. I think he may be in a type of shock, but I really hope he comes out fine.

Update #1

Went and checked on him last night and just called the vet. They shot X-rays and didn't see anything broken, but he does have a crushed lung I believe. He is being more attentive than before, and he just needs to rest and recover from the soreness.

Ok, well I got Pounce back today. He is doing about the same. The vet ended up finding two pretty good cuts on him and told me to put some Neosporian on them. He still can't move too much but is getting better. One thing I'm afraid of is him becoming emotionally scarred I guess. He seems to want to keep to himself, for example, laying behind the toilet all alone. Anyway, if anyone has anything that might help, just let me know. Thanks

It looked like he had some bite marks on his ear and my brother said he saw some dogs wandering the streets. He's mostly an indoor cat but we let them run around outside because there not really any harm. He doesn't have any front claws so he was pretty much defenseless if it was a dog after him. I think it literally scared the crap out of him cause it was all over his tail. I swear if I see a dog roaming out there I'm going to run the damn thing over.

Um, how about leaving your cat with no front claws inside for now on there?

I have two cats both with their front claws removed and would never even consider letting them go outside.

I've honestly never seen any dogs around our neighborhood. He mainly stays in our front yard just playing and the garage door is usually cracked so they have some place to go. I admit, he shouldn't be outside.....especially during the night.

Have his kidneys and liver checked out. I had a cat that hid when his liver or kidneys (can't remember) were failing. Luckily we found him on time, and he survived. He also was an easy target for other cats and dogs that wanted to take his place (as 'ruler' of our neighbourhood).

Seriously, have it checked out. He may 'Pounce' P) back for a little while and then die without you ever knowing what it was. HAVE HIM CHECKED OUT!

Specifically tell them to check his liver and kidneys, then. I think 9 out of 10 vets will say:"Oh, this cat is coming together just fine. You can take him home." And then two days after, a sudden relapse followed by death under 30 minutes. It can happen, seriously. I'm not saying it's his liver or kidneys, but if it is, make sure they know. It's very treatable, but death is inevitable if they find out too late. Make sure that if they find out, that it's not too late!

"I heard from someone that had an equal experience that something with either the liver or the kidneys, I can't remember which, was wrong. Please, Mr/Mrs/Miss VETSNAME, check those out."



EDIT: If it's one of those two, the solution (we used, anyways) was a couple of injections and a special food, either Royal Canin or Hills, I can't recall. He'll be missing for 2 years coming 3rd November. I miss him lots .

If they do a blood test they can tell whether the kidneys and liver are functioning correctly.

Leave the guy alone. Maybe he's living somewhere where people don't want to kill cats that come in a 100 mile radius of their yards? Maybe he's living somewhere where killing (small) animals is against the law, even if they are on your property?

The responses I have read about what people do with cats or other small animals that come in their yard or hinder them, shoot them, poison them, take them to the woods, take them to a shelter where they will be killed after x days, those people sicken me.

True, these are the first things to go in an aging cat. We had a cat who was hiding in the garage and appeared sickly, so we took her to the vet and the vet did some blood/kidney/liver tests and they all came back good (vet said she never would have known the cat was 16 y/o looking at the blood tests). Turns out she just had a "cold". Anyways, a year later she was sick again, so another trip to the vet, and this time her kidneys were failing (she was becoming diabetic). We chose to have her put down vice giving her shots twice daily for the rest of her life. So make sure you get kidney/liver tests done. Especially for feline leukemia (sp?). Hope Pounce is doing well.

The neighborhood is a very friendly one. It's very common for people to let their cats out throughout the day. Yes, I do love this little guy. Me and the GF found him when he was about 2 weeks old and we had to feed him with a dropper. He is pretty much our kid. He will be 1 year this month. I still haven't told the GF though, shes 3 hours away and I don't want her to be worried until we know what exactly is going to happen.

That's no excuse to let a declawed cat outside.

Edit: OP, I'm sorry to hear what happened. Hopefully everything turns out all right. I know how pets can become family. It always hurts to see them go.
