Wait, I wonder if that article was wrong. It says that only 3 Cat. 5 hurricanes have hit the US Mainland in our history as a nation, the last being Andrew in 1992... but wasn't Katrina a Cat. 5? And it struck the mainland last I checked...

it grew to 5 but hit mainland at 4 (or was it 3?). Rita may stay a 5 at landfall

Ahhh, I didn't know that. I want to say it hit as a Cat. 4, because the levees were designed to withstand Cat. 3s and below.
