I live in S Florida and lost power for the weekend. This was a nasty storm. I feel bad for the folks in LA/MS but this storm's damage was felt here in florida as well. My mothers house had water in the garage and 4" inside the foyer. I had buckets all through my house catching water that was coming in through air vents... Man its been rough.

I'm nervous for Aaron...all reports say text messaging is working well to get in touch with people who stayed in the area...but I haven't gotten a response yet...

I don't see how Text Messaging can be working with the Cell Towers and/or the T1 lines that feed them down.

I have been partially able to log into the system to see the bulk of the New Orleans area down. I see no activity out of any sites on the North Shore.

Good to see you made it out of there yourself. You evacuated, right?

Good point. People on nola.com and wwltv forums reporting texting friends and family still in the city with better success than calling.

It could be that a few sites on battery power you may be able to communicate site to site only. In other words the sites are in "Local Mode".

Some of those sites may also have a generator and will run only until the fuel runs out. Most need refueling 8-12 hrs so they will not be able to Text very long. 🙁

You know what's funny about the looters.... technically if it's under sea water... it's not looting. It's salvaging and they are entitled to salvage rights. If what they take is above water..... then that's looting and I think in certain instances it IS a capital offense.

i don't think a judge would take that as a defense...at least i hope not 🙁

I've been without internet since 8am. I don't know if I have power or not as I went to a friend's house, but it blinked and went out several times before I left.

From what I've been reading Gulfport and Biloxi have experienced catastrophic damage, and several wards in NOLA are flooded in an extreme manner. Pascagoula was hit EXTREMELY hard as well, and Slidell experienced Catastrophic damage as well. Ground Zero appears to be Plaquemines Parish and Bay St. Louis, MS.

Several casinos in MS were destroyed or floated out to sea.

Driving on the interstate was rough on the way over here, and the red lights in Hoover were swinging. Banks and other places were closed. This is in BIRMINGHAM -- well inland, so you have to realize that the LA, MS, and AL coast have experienced extreme destruction. The surge at Gulf Shores was reported to be as bad as Ivan and they took a direct hit during it.

I think we've got our first 100 billion dollar storm. The economic impact and the damage to the coast is sickening.

Crazy how widespread the damage is.

I'm almost positive my parents' and grandmother's houses are underwater in Lakeview. 🙁

Have you been able to confirm that?

For those that don't know, casinos in Mississippi can't be located on state land. So the casinos at Tunica and along the coast are actually "floating" structures over the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast, respectively.

I heard on the way home from work that reports that the water has reached the 2nd and possibly 3rd floors (remember, they are out over the water) of some casinos. But, nothing about them headed out to sea.

Cannot confirm -- eyewitness report from Storm2k relayed to them by a relative.

"Grand Casino - GONE (not sure which one)
Treasure Bay Casino smashed into President Casino"

That was the report.

OMG! Wow, I haven't heard that yet.

How's things in Hoover? I hear the chances for tornadoes is pretty high for that area.

The storm as definately weakened, but we're still bracing for it here in Tupelo. It should probably hit here sometime around 10-12 tonight. The wind coming from the east is still extremely strong even now, as we are starting to get into some of the outer bands.

The casinos have only enough leeway to adjust for tide changes.

Increase in the waterlevel above that designed flexability will unmoor the barges and set them free floating.

There is normally no engine power or steering mechanism.

It's getting real windy in Tupelo, Mississpi. Up to 70 mph wind at my moms house and trees down. Center of storm expected to get here about 1:00 AM.
This storm is strong. I'm 250 miles away from the coast.
