Man, I live in Slidell. I evacuated to my brother's in Houston. I'm getting the feeling that Slidell got hit pretty hard. My house is pretty close to the lake and has (had) tall pines around it. I'm anxious about assessing the damage...

you have insurance, right?
Oops, I was answering this question.
Sorry, I'm sucking at posting right now. I was asking what you do if your house is not liveable? I don't think insurance companies pay to put you up somewhere do they? Anyone been through that kind of thing?

Aztech I believe that largly depends on your insurance company and your policy. You may also get some help from FEMA.

It's a curse and a blessing. Since it wasn't destroyed, now they're going to try to rebuild it, and the same problem is going to happen all over again.
But my feeling is that this time they'll actually think about long-term solutions, ala the Big Dig in Boston. Big problems call for bigger solutions.

I think a good insurance company would. At least until your house is made habitable again but before it's completely finished of course. That seems logical to me.

Got to sleep.

Hope we hear from AaronB at some point.

Edit: yeah I saw that adult toys sign. My friend told me he saw it on CNN a little while ago 🙂

Did anyone get any contact from AaronB via phone? I doubt he'll have access to internet for a couple days now.

I think someone sent him a text message, but I haven't seen any news of him replying yet.

We have Aaron's work address, work phone number, and cell phone number; I've have Werk working on it, he'll tell you when he finds Aaron.

Based on experience with Andrew.

The insurance will put you into temp shelter/housing/mobile trailers while damage is being repaired if the dwelling is not habitable. Basic section of homeowners insurance.

There will be a deductible for damages, however, replacement coverage usually will more than cover losses.

Damage caused by flood waters will come under a flood policy.

Most places near the coast are required to have flood insurance as well as home-owners insurance by the people that hold the note on the property.

Why the looting? WHY?! I'll never understand that. There's no need for it, the stuff is NOT yours. Looters should be shot on sight old west style.

because people are greedy and will take advantage of whatever situation to get something for nothing...no matter how tragic it may have been

yet another reason why i'm becoming a speciesist...kind of like a racist only i hate everyone...

and yes i just made that term up on the spot, and if i put some thought into it i could come up with something better...actually there's probably already a word for it 😛
Xenophobe?

not suspiscous of foreign people...i am just beginning to dislike people in general due to the way they act

misanthrope?

You know what's funny about the looters.... technically if it's under sea water... it's not looting. It's salvaging and they are entitled to salvage rights. If what they take is above water..... then that's looting and I think in certain instances it IS a capital offense.

Here's an interesting quote, too bad no one will follow it anyhow.

"We would really encourage people not to come back [to New Orleans] for at least a week," said Ivor van Heerden, director of the Center for the Study of Public Health Impacts of Hurricanes in Baton Rouge.

"If you came back, you would be coming literally to a wilderness," he said. "If your house is gone, it's gone. If you come back in a day or a week,it's not going to make any difference." (Full story)

I'm nervous for Aaron...all reports say text messaging is working well to get in touch with people who stayed in the area...but I haven't gotten a response yet...

I don't see how Text Messaging can be working with the Cell Towers and/or the T1 lines that feed them down.

I have been partially able to log into the system to see the bulk of the New Orleans area down. I see no activity out of any sites on the North Shore.

Good point. People on nola.com and wwltv forums reporting texting friends and family still in the city with better success than calling.
