I just checked the answering machine at the house remotely and my neighbors are asking to use my house as a shelter because their house across the street is not on stilts and is basically just a trailer. LOL too bad for them
It's OK, when the wind picks up their trailer and slams it into your property they will then claim squatter's rights!.

Our 3 hour drive to San Antonio took 14 hours. My coworker who went to Dallas took 40 hours. Most hellacious drive of my life.

Holy crap, I've driven Houston to San Antonio and on to Laredo and then back several times and that's some of the most deserted highway on Earth. It's hard to imagine it being even slightly busy.

I can only take a couple p&n posts before I have to leave, but I think I remember you being one of the more 'progressive' posters. That's not a very progressive attitude. I'd expect a progressive to want to take care of his neighbors; Or is that just for everyone else?

They are asking to use my $500,000 house for a week, while I'm not there, and they aren't offering to pay me anything... Also, their reasoning at the time for not building a raised slab was "we didn't want to spend all that money one some fancy house when we can spend it all on Trucks and boats and live in a trailer". They own like 4 different $50k trucks and a boat that is 2x the size of mine.

Being politically liberal doesn't IMO require me to make the home I spent a ton of money trying to protect from this specific outcome into a homeless shelter for lazy-but-well-off neighbors. They have the vehicles and the money to evacuate, they'd just rather use my house instead.

Too bad. I told them to GTFO of the Keys ASAP.

I might well be doing them a favor. That house may be rated to 150mph winds but the 3rd floor is not concrete and it has never truly been through even 100mph winds yet. It may collapse and kill them all.

Also I should point out that it was 100% predictable that a hurricane would eventually hit the Keys again and wipe them out. Flood insurance is so expensive in the area, it isn't even worth the money. Insurance appraisers told me it would cost $25k/yr to insure my 500k property against flood... that's right, just flood.

They knew this would happen and they decided they'd just rely on their neighbors and spend the money on themselves. Pure stupidity and selfishness on their part and they have nobody to blame but themselves.

If you can't afford the insurance you can't afford the house.

So do you or do you not have flood insurance on your $500k property?

If you do not, per your own rules we'll need to know how your county voted to know whether you deserve any federal help if it gets hit. ;)

I don't deserve federal help. Why would I? I had full opportunity to buy that insurance (for 25k for a 500k property that isn't probably even worth 500k).

I decided I'd build to hurricane spec... which was expensive... but it should hold up OK even in a category 3 or 4 storm. I don't know about Cat 5 though.

I fully take responsibility for my property and my actions, and I don't expect to receive one red cent in funds from the feds. My deplorable neighbors might do the leg work for me and force me to receive fund though. they love those free govt. dollars

Uh, well it looks like you're going to get the chance to find out.

Irma has been upgraded to Super Saiyan Category 5, with 175mph winds. The NHC didn't even wait on this; they issued a special advisory as soon as the hurricane hunters hit it this morning.

NOAA and U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft have recently measured peak flight-level winds of around 170 kt and SFMR winds of around 150 kt. Based on these data the initial intensity has been increased to 150 kt, making Irma an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane. Some additional strengthening is still possible, but fluctuations in intensity are likely during the next couple of days due to eyewall replacement cycles.

The official forecast is that it may drop to Cat 4 by the 5th day. But intensity forecasts are unreliable.

It's not looking good.

In the Florida Keys any new structure you build is required to be on 12' concrete stilts. This is because of the destruction caused by the storm surge during George and Andrew. The water basically reached about 5' deep on the whole island during George. This will be much worse.

However, because there are so many people in Florida who enjoy living in trailers and 1 story homes, Florida has grandfathered in those structures and allowed people to live in them despite the obvious danger. So only about 2/3rds of the houses in my neighborhood are built hurricane-resistant.

This is going to cause huge problems.

Sometimes they drop in intensity before hitting the florida coast. If it runs over Cuba it might lose some steam. I can only hope.

The structure itself is rated to 150mph winds. The main concrete slab will survive anything, but the 3rd floor could be torn straight off if the winds reach >180mph. Which is possible.

Eeeesh! I've seen 45 look like that, but never 10 west of Katy. I did the San Antonio to Houston thing one night about 2am and never passed a single car along that middle 100 mile stretch

Pretty good chance of that, Haiti is mountainous and can tear up a storm a little bit. So maybe it hits Florida at 150mph instead of 170mph. But man, that track is freaking scary. Looks like it's going to head right up the middle of the wang and hit every single part of the state.

Reminds me of that bitch, Katrina, except it turned into a five while in the Gulf after it skipped over Florida.

Yea, WOW is this beast scary!, the forecast track has now shifted slightly to the west coast of FL but it's so big and powerful we will still see hurricane force winds even 130 miles away. Irma is currently the 5th strongest Atlantic hurricane on record and Jeff Masters expects more intensification since the Caribbean waters are yet warmer plus the relative humidity is going up and only a 5-knot shear. Here is his blog site at weather underground, very smart dude, https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/category-5-irma-5th-strongest-atlantic-hurricane-record Here is the latest track, it seems any hope of this monster going out to sea are about gone at this point.

If you can't find propane, you should have plenty of fallen trees to use as firewood. If I lost power for extended period of time, I would be so screwed. I have 4 fridges and freezers full of meat I would have to cook before it went bad. Probably like 400+ lbs of meat. I would be like this guy, trying to grill and BBQ before the meat goes bad.
