hurricane: 1, idiot: 0

A South Florida businessman says he's going to try to reduce the strength of Hurricane Ivan by flying a Boeing 747 into the edge of the hurricane and dumping thousands of pounds of an absorbent material into the storm.

:Q

If the dumbass really wanted to do anything - he'd drop it on the outer edges of the eye wall. In mass quantities, there could be a small effect - IMHO, it's probably the only way to possibly disrupt the circulation.

wouldnt the countries he dropped it on sorta sue him? or wouldnt the eviromental people really get onto him?

LOL.....

So the particles of powder will absorb moisture I imagine.. what happens when they become too heavy and fall to the ground? The hurricane will re-intensify quite quickly, I would imagine.

What I want to know is who the hell would be stupid enough to rent this guy the plane to do it with? I can just imagine the conversation...

"Acme Air Tanker Rental, can I help you?"
"Hi, I'd like to rent one of your planes to fly into a hurricane, please!"

yes the hurricane will be stopped

to be replaced by hail storm

to offset the hail, they will hire people with ak47's shooting in the sky to destroy the hail

the bullet shells? they'll deploy massive flame throwers to melt the shells

massive air conditioners will be built to cool down the temperature

15 new nuclear power plants will be put into service to provide the energy

about 3000 people will be hired to work in the nuclear power plant

one of them being homer simpson

woo hoo!

see how it all works out fine?

not to mention.. some place is gonna be buried in.. 1000's must = at least 2000, or it'd not be 1000'S.. of lbs x 3000 to 4000 lbs = what, at least 6-8 millions of pounds of what amounts to the soggy jelly-like insides of used diapers.. hurled around at a 100mph or so.. doesn't that sound like fun?

anno

doing the math... doing the math....
Let's assume he means dumping 5000 pounds..... and they get the maximum 4000 times their weight in water...
that's 20 million pounds of water. Hmmmm... divide by 8.. 2.5 million gallons of water... times 231 cubic inches per gallon..
577.5 million cubic inches of water... divide by 12^3
334,000 cubic feet of water..
Sqrt... that's an area of 578 feet by 578 feet covered 1 foot deep in water..
Or, 7.67 acres

So, this guy thinks that by reducing the hurricane by the amount of rain that fell over a couple of city blocks is going to put a dent in it?! It's pretty hard to fathom the size of a hurricane and the amount of water in it... I wouldn't even know where to begin to start estimating it.. wait a second... yes I would... Google!
Here, I found this:
A hurricane gets it energy from the conversion of water vapor to rain. 90 million tons of water vapor are required per hour for a hurricane to form.

So this guy thinks that messing around with 10 thousand tons of water is going to do something? That's literally a drop in a bucket compared to the size of a hurricane.
10,000 just once < 90,000,000 every hour
