Hurray for Jury Duty

MrDudeMan

Lifer
I called the number to see if I still have to go and I was told I need to be there at 8:15AM tomorrow morning. I am spoiled by my job...I never get to work that early. 🙁

Ever been on jury duty? If so and it's something you can discuss, what was your case?

Edit: added a poll option for "yes but no assignment"

i did not make it through the selection process. tell them you hate (random ethnic group here) and you will be out in 10 min

haha. I don't like liars though so unfortunately I'll have to be honest. I hope I don't get assigned to anything really boring. I want to see some courtroom antics.

I was called on to serve on a case once. Lasted about 4 days and it was pretty interesting to see the court system in action though there were no "courtroom antics" to speak of.

I've never been in any type of trial so I don't really know how the whole process works. I'd love to walk into a "My Cousin Vinny" type of trial instead of the boring one that surely awaits me.

i am in the waiting room for jury duty right now. its 3pm and they still didn't call my name yet... 🙁

YES, and IMO it's something you should do...I wasn't exactly on a huge case or anything, but the guy was caught staking his ex wife/kids and whatnot 9 times, and had 9 counts against him or something, this was RIGHT when I turned 18...so it's been a few years already.

Pretty cool to see the whole system in action. Our case lasted 2 days...deliberations were a bit long.

Man, you get to know the other jurors really quick too.

Yes I have and you should sit there and take it. You wouldn't want a pissed off jury if you had a trial would you? Anyway, I was there for three days and never got called.

Just remember, if you don't show up, the deputy will show up and ask you why not.

I've been summoned 5 times and served on two trials.

The first was a civil case that went a total of about 5 days; judgment for the plaintiff for $48. Yes, forty eight dollars separated a lot of people from their jobs/families for a week.

The second was also a civil case that went about 3.5 days; judgment for the plaintiff for ~$50K IIRC. Somehow I was elected foreman of that jury though I knew noone else on the jury (just about everyone else seemed to know somebody on the jury).

Twice I went in the first day but never went into a courtroom and didn't have to return that week, and the other time I was interviewed by the lawyers but not selected for duty (criminal trial).

Wtf? When did I ever say I had any intention of not showing up or being a little bitch about it? I made an obviously sarcastic comment about waking up earlier than usual, but nothing about being pissed off about this. I expect it to be boring but have no problem with this and am only hoping for something interesting. Thanks though.

i JUST got my first summons (27yo now). But, it was to Harris county and I have not lived there for 9 years so I had to politely decline.

I was on a grand jury a couple of years ago. We decided whether there was sufficient evidence to send a case to trial. I was even appointed foreman... foreperson... whatever. It was a good experience actually.

I can usually keep myself entertained but I'd prefer to not have this happen. Oh well either way though, right? I'll bring a book in case I'm allowed to bring it in with me and I don't get called.

Received a notice a few years back, and was required to show up on either the last or second-to-last day of my "window" period. I only had a motorcycle at the time, and it was the beginning or middle of January, so that made for a nice sub-arctic 7am ride to the county justice and administration center.

The one good part about the whole experience was that my particular grouping of JD notifiees never received any lunch, so by about 1pm, the judge apologized for the mix-up, and said that we were all free to go and wouldn't be summoned back. Yay.

Edit: I will admit, though, that it's generally a nice feeling to know that you're "doing your civic duty," however small said duty might be.

I'm sure I've had summons several times. Unfortunately for them, I've moved far too many times for them to find me.

I wasn't trying to single you out. I meant to put a good "lol" for emphasis and forgot.

You actually did well, it's half the other ass hats on here that will tell you to be a racist/have back problems/are gay/hate people in general that are retarded.

The comment about the deputy was a horribly applied joke on the 8:15 being early for ya. Hell mine was a 9 and I barely made it.

Oh ok, no problem. Maybe this will train me to get to work earlier. Doubtful but one can always hope.

I was summoned while in college. Obviously, I told them I couldn't go, as I wasn't in the county at the time. I would sort have liked to go, it would have been interesting.

Wife is a prosecutor so I am exempt!

FYI - prosecutors typically try to release scientist/engineers and grade school teachers if that helps.
