Too bad. I enjoyed his books and other stuff he did. Sad to see an icon and storied beat poet die.

Apparently, he's not the marksman he should have been. He shot his assistant a few years ago cheasing a bear off his property.

well, lets not pretend he was sober when that happened.
man...
this is sad.
i loved the good doctor.

WHY?>??????

I can imagine he'd reached a point in his life where it seemed like a viable option. Accomplishing everything that he had, it was plain that only the end was stretched out before him. Knowing the kind of person that he was, doesn't it kind of make sense this way?

Rolling Stone had a really good article about him and Depp before the movie came out, it was a pretty good read.

i think it was the beginning of Fear and Loathing '72 Trail that he wrote of "The Edge" saying something like "only those that have gone over can honestly tell us what it is like."
the introduction to the book took on a very somber tone that resonated with the famous nietzsche concept of the abyss.
can we find another contemporary american who stared so hard into the darkness that he recognized not only that the abyss stared back, but that his only peer was the darkness and that the world surrounding him was more madness than humans can suffer in complete conciousness?

Hmm, so perhaps this makes sence after all.

Now the question is was he on a good trip or bad trip when he dediced to pull the trigger?

Nice one.

At least he provided the basis for an enjoyable movie.

I beg to differ. Fear And Loathing manages to win a coveted place as one of the five movies I've walked away from.

What are the other 4, as a frame of reference?

Imposter.
U Turn.
Liar Liar.
The Thin Red Line.

Hero to drug-addled teens the world over.

Better not fall off that horse you're riding copper, seems like an awfully long way to the ground.

I'm guessing you really don't know a whole lot about Thompson as an author and contributor to literary style. No he's not Hemingway, (a drunk who also commited suicide), or Edgar Allen Poe (another drunk), or Shakespeare (likely a drunk), or Kerouac (I'm guessing you're seeing where this is going by now), but it is UNDENIABLE that Thompson's journalistic 'style' (for lack of a better word) is very impactful in current pop culture... I'm not sure reality television would even exist if it weren't for Hunter S. Thompson... which might not be a bad thing, actually.

All's I'm saying is the guy, for all his faults, and by no means am I excusing them, was a force in contemporary culture and you can't just blithely say we'd be better off without him... there's no way of knowing.... he's all around us...

Heheh... for some reason, this made me laugh... A tragedy or something, and all you can remember is the name of one book, and a sports article page...

😀

Interesting list. What made you walk out of this one? Just the overall absurdity (you'd probably label it as stupidity)?

Nevermind the book, which I have not read; the film struck me as contrived, pretentious without merit, but most of all I found it annoying. I really can't stand individuals or media that attempt to be different for the sake of being different.

I would also like to add that I fell asleep when we saw Meet The Fockers. Not because I was tired, but because sleep was a far better alternative than watching the remainder of a train wreck of a movie.

No, not until after. I was responding to the comment I quoted in the beer-addled heat of the moment.
Your subsequent conversation with Sacrosanct Fiend didn't really make up for the thoughtlessness of the post I quoted though...

You have no perspective. You're either young, or not well read. Thompson wasn't trying to be different. He WAS different.

Yes, I'm young, and no, I'm not very well-read. Regardless, the movie was rubbish.

The good doctor completely redefined what journalism could be and for that I will always be touched and grateful to him. Many people may not agree with his views but you cannot deny that the world would be a much sadder place if he'd never existed, as it is now that he doesn't. I always knew this is how he'd probably go out and in a strange way, it's comforting.

I will never forget your words HST.
