IS there any way to get a virus other than running an attachment? Would the preview pane in Outlook execute a virus? Can hackers install one without you knowing it?
The answer to your question would be, yes.

If any only if they use an exploit however; just having an attachment and having the preview pane aren't enough to cause any problems.

With no AV "software" running I am 100% safe from this virus. Yet another "virus" that requires defective wetware to spread. Nothing to see here folks.

The fact that these viruses requiring manual interaction with idiots spread so well nowadays is testament to the fact that the average person on the net nowadays is dumber than a cow.

Good thing my AntiVirus is updated. I can just imagine one of my email contact just getting infected, and getting my inbox filled.

on a brighter note, we're upgrading our supercomputer.

:)

Errrr... don't say "upgrading"... say "fixing". And don't ask anyone in the project about it. ;-)

But yeah, we got slammed. Look at my post a few above. I'm hoping they were bright enough to bring another server online to just catch the emails that were sent from Monday-Wednesday....

Get the Stinger. Here is the webpage link.

McAfee AVERT Stinger

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

the virus i am talking about is called w32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen i did the scan with the stinger but it seem like it didn't even track it. It doesn't seem like it is listed a virus it can execute.:(

EDIT:also known as Backdoor.Agobot[Kaspersky]

Let me know when someone releases a real virus that has anything better than a "click_here_stoopid.exe" attachment.

Turn off trash can protection, reboot in safe mode, and then run the tool, that's all you have to do. Your machine isn't going to blow up or anything.;)

With those people out of the way, the spread of viruses would slow to a crawl.

this is brilliant.

No doubt. You can either be a Linux-using smug ahole who only can surf the net or if you happen to be a gamer and play all the latest online games then you are Window's slave. I prefer being a slave that can have fun than a slave to a system that won't allow me to have any. (besides writing virii)
:p

Mozilla thunderbird is a great solution to these issues. It makes you save to disk before you can open a virus, but of course that is only one extra step for the brain-dead.

So are the 9999 billion new games which come out every week for.....ehrm...Linux ?! :p
Don't forget, you have to divide that by 3; as there's the KDE version, the Gnome version, and the universal version. So the real total is only 3333 billion or so.;)
