Had 9800 Pro / 2005 fpw, now with x800xl / 2005 fpw.

Difference is noticeable. I could play hl2 at 1680x1050 with 2x aniso and no AA fine. 2x AA made it slow in some parts. Now I have 4x AA and aniso and I get 40-45 fps minimum in heavy action. Usually around 90-110 fps though.

Although I don't have a 2001 FP (I have a CRT) I do have a 6800 unlocked and overclocked nearly to 6800GT speeds. Going from a 5900 Ultra, the difference was very clear. The performance difference is amazing.
