So, how would you rate your gameplay compared to gaming on a 9800 pro?

I have

2500+ barton
1GB RAM
8800pro R350 128MB:(
dell 200fp

for reference in HLF2 I get a average framerate of about 40fps using the CS test. Of course, this is much less during actual gameplay:(

I run HL2 @ 1600x1200 with only trilinear filtering. No AA or AF:(

I remember ssing the video that valve posted in the hlf2 updates and the movement in game was scary. it was soooo smooth.

Went from 9800xt to 6800gt on one of my rigs & speed difference was definately noticeable. Went from gaming at 1024x768 with no AA/2x AF to 1600x1200 with 4x AA/4x AF on most games. However, one negative I've noticed is that video files play back slower on the 6800gt than the 9800xt... especially hi-def .ts & wmv files. I notice some lag with the 6800gt that wasn't there with 9800xt.

I don't have a 2001FP (but do have a 2005FPW)....and I never owned a 9800 Pro (and I got rid of my 9700 Pro well before HL2 came out....) :p

With that said, I run at all settings maxed, 1680x1050, 4xAA/8xAF, and it's often very smooth (60fps)...drops to 30fps (I use Vsync) are not by any means rare, but I can live with them.

Edit: Current card is a 6800GT

Even in the FS/T forums here?

Even so, I think I've seen a lot of pretty nice deals on (AGP) 6800GT's lately anyway ;)

Like that Robert Horry Spurs .ts file on my 9800xt it played back smooth but on my 6800gt it would play at like 15 - 30 fps & choppy.

Yeah...broken PVP in the 6800 series = suck. My only real complaint with my video card (and is why I'm waiting for the ATI R520 before I make a decision on a next-gen card).

Yeah thats the only downside of the 6800gt... if you want good video playback as well in conjunction with good fps in games maybe X800XL is the way to go.

Yeah...I didn't think about that because I have an HDTV tuner with hardware MPEG2 decoder that takes care of all my transport streams for me...:p

Get a 6600GT. Runs HL2 very well. Although I do run it at 'only' 1280x1024 max candy, trilinear no AA no AF cause I can never tell the advantage of having these on during game play, sure, If I stand around gawping at the scene, maybe...

I will never understand people that use AA @ high resolutions like 1600 x 1200. The whole point of AA was to make lower resolutions look better. When you run AA @ those resolutions, there is basically no visual difference other than making your vid card work harder for nothing.

Anywho...I think you system overall might also be a reason why your gameplay in HL2 is not up to par. I know on my A64/NF3 based system with a 9800 Pro, I can play HL2 @ 1600 x 1200 @ 100hz with 8X AF on my 9800 Pro with no slowdowns...

I do get the occasional slowdown with my XP-M @ 2.5Ghz/NF7-S/9800 Pro system though...

Higher resolutions generally come with bigger monitors...I can very easily see aliasing at 1680x1050 on my monitor if I turn off AA.
