Humor At Dinner

I give extra points to candidates that have a sense of humor.

It may not be that big a deal to those here who can't find much to laugh about and to those who can't even begin to humanize their opposites, but being able to deliver a punch line is an invaluable skill in politics.

Both candidates made remarks at the Al Smith Foundation dinner held by the New York Archdiocese in Manhattan last night. The dinner is a traditional event where the presidential candidates appear and trade barbs with one another weeks before the presidential election.

This is a debate that did not have the press screening questions, offering excuses to their favorite and the audience only had to laugh to register their approval.

Joe Biden was not invited so as to not skew the polling. :awe:

Agreed, I thought '08 was a lot better as it felt like an honest step back from the campaign trail. Romney was too biting at times

Hannity was going on about how much better Romney did, saying he "brought down the house" while Obama "seemed flat". He was puzzled by this, never considering for a moment that it might have been a result of his own biases.

To his credit, he did play both of the men's routines. And I did notice that Romney got a few more laughs.

But what was far more noticeable of a difference is that the majority of Romney's jokes were attacks on Obama -- some of them rather harsh -- while Obama's routine was mostly self-deprecating.

Again, says something about character -- or lack thereof.

The lack of character thing is a theme amongst Republicans these days. I caught a bit of the final Murphy-McMahon debate this week in CT. As usual, the sheep are sick and tired of all the negative ads so the question posed was this:

You have two minutes to say nice things about the other candidate.

Murphy went first and complimented her on her drive and charitable contributions. McMahon said Murphy had beautiful children and ... that's it. 😀

Both were good...but I thought Romney was funnier - and that actually surprised me. I thought Obama would be funnier than Romney. Thanks for the links, I missed it live.
